£5k to 6k practical hatch

I'm going to remember that the Berlin wall came down 20 years ago and Skoda jokes stopped applying once VW bought them. These are better finished than the equivalent Audi or VW and they are assembed from effectively the same parts.

Badge snobbery goes so far, but at this end of the market Skoda makes an awful lot of sense.

Not for the kind of person whos main criteria is how it looks. sad but true

It's really bizarre, but if you can just get someone behind the wheel of a Skoda, they tend to buy it. The whole badge snobbery thing tends to get turned on it's head and most Skoda drivers look at people driving the equivalent VW/Audi and pi$$ themselves laughing at the poor schmucks who've shelled out quite literally thousands more for the same engine, gearbox etc. but with a 'prestige' badge on it.

I quite like the badge. People shouldn't forget where things came from, or what they can become. Before the war, Skoda was a serious prestige car manufacturer, right up there with Bugatti, Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Then the Russians occupied what is now the Czech Republic and they were forced to build slightly less wonderful cars.

Now they have proper investment and they are once again building great cars.

You really should get your head straight about this. You're a snob. That's not a good thing.

Where is the line between having high standards and being a snob?

Why do you drive an Audi TT not an Octavia 2.0TDI vRS?

If you remember, I originally ordered a Skoda Superb 4x4 diesel estate but the contract was cancelled and I needed a car. I was offered immediate delivery on a Volvo V70 or an Audi TT. It was a no-brainer really.

Likewise, my Touareg was the cheapest big estate I get a lease deal on, on the day I needed to place the order. If I could get a Skoda, I'd have one. I would, honestly.

And all my cars are serviced at the Skoda dealer in Norwich.
