Ordered a cheap 5M Cat5e CCA patch cable to connect a PC directly to a router at gigabit speeds. Later found out CCA is crap but I shouldn’t have a problem getting a gigabit with it over 5M. It’s only a few quid so not the end of the world if it’s *****, it’s not like I’m wiring up the whole place with it.

Managed to cancel the order and ordered a 6M Cat6 Flat full copper cable instead, it was only 17p more expensive. The CCA cable would’ve probably been fine but I wasn’t totally happy with it.

Bit of a frying pan and fire moment here really, it’s not going to really matter over 5m but flat cables don’t have the pairs twisted around each other and don’t perform as well as round cables. But again, it won’t matter for 1Gb and 5 metres.

Received the cable today and plugged it into my Mac, at first I was only getting 100 Megabit per second. I'd read one review on Amazon saying that the cable wasn't capable of more than 100 Megabit per second.

So I went into the network options on my Mac and there was a setting to change it from 100BASE-T to 1000BASE-T after that I got this speed test result...

I've never had to do anything like that on my Windows machine and I'm guessing the reviewer who left a 1 star review stating it was only capable of 100 Megabit per second was a Mac user.

Never had to do that on my Mac.
Strange I had to manually set it to 1000baseT as it was set to 100baseT by default hence why I was getting speed test results of 100 Megabit per second over the cable...

I've just tried changing it to automatic and it stays at 1000baseT speeds. All I know is if I hadn't gone in and manually changed the settings there was no way I was getting gigabit speeds over the cable.
