5v5

Originally when the first clangames started in Quake, I think the format was quite loose (i.e. depended how many players showed up). The the UKCL (United Kingdom Clan League, back when Quakeworld was the only game to play) settled on 5v5, which by around 1998 was reduced to 4v4 due to the increased speed of the game.

But it varies from game to game. Some games/mods have much larger formats the 5v5, take teamfortress as an example.

back in my older CS days, it was 6v6 a lot lot more, but these days I think especially on CS 5 is the most you should have for a competitive match as it'll keep the team a lot tighter and closer, but also easier if there aren't that many members in a team, but it'll totally depend on the game, as say BF2 would likely need a lot more etc

All depends on map size which is linked to the game as to how many it should be. There are 32v32 clan matches of BF2 but there is also 5v5. Just depends on the game type/map size.

Agree with this. Down to map size, gametype etc.

Most of my BF2 matches are 8v8, or 5v5 for infantry.

My fave setup is 6v6 as in the Quake 2/3 CTF games. Thats the perfect number to organise a defence, mid and attack (not necessarily 2/2/2 of course).

isnt 5 v 5 just a knock on effect of the older servers not being able to hold as many players, 12 man server, 10 players and an admin and in halflife a hltv? (at least it was like this in the days of wireplay hldm, rember weve not always had 64 man servers

As has been stated it seems to vary a lot depending on games. 4v4 was the standard for quake 1/2/3 TDM games while 6v6 got used for CTF matches. 5v5 really seems to have come for CS which took over as THE competitive team game and thus because the standard for future, similar games, like the COD series.
