A friend wants to get a PC for his son to play fortnite and I've offered to help build one for him, rather than buying something from the highstreet.

He needs everything, pc, monitor, periperhals etc. I built something similar for my son a while ago so I've got a starting point, but he only does minecraft and roblox type games, so I don't know what would be needed to run fortnite.

Would the on-board graphics of AMD or Intel be OK at 1080p?

If not, what graphics card for approx. £200 - £250 would be the best option?

Probably nothing second hand, so best that I could buy off the shelf.

easily done, though if you need speakers/headset then will need to juggle the build slightly

the only thing is that radeons don't work very well with fortnite dx11 performance mode, the workaround is not to use dx11 performance and use dx12 instead (or just use dx 11 standard mode)
there is no equivalent nvidia card with similar performance at this price-point

That’s awesome thanks. It’s the lower tier graphics cards that I don’t have any current experience of. Thanks!
The Rx 6600 is a solid 1080p card for the money.

Note none of the CPUs recommended from amd or intel have onboard graphics.

If you prefer intel then swap to this.

RX 6600 is the best sub-£200 card, or the 6650 XT if you can get one near that price. The 3050 8GB is a decent chunk slower than the 6600, so you'd only buy it if nvidia was essential.

The 3060 12GB is around £250 and is not a bad buy for a content creator, but you'd usually get the 4060 8GB instead for gaming, since it is newer and has much lower power consumption. Here's a fairly lengthy video on the subject:

I'd avoid the RX 6400, 6500 XT and RTX 3050 6GB, they will struggle with the newer games, so I consider them a poor long-term investment unless the card HAS to use only slot power (like upgrading a Dell). The 6400/6500 XT also have technical limitations the 6600 does not have, which makes them even less appealing.

Thanks chaps. I've gone back to him with it and will see what he wants to do. For the GPU I'm thinking 6650XT if I can squeeze it in the budget or 6600 if not. No preference of nvidia / AMD / Intel etc, so that's not an issue. 4060's are probably pushing it cost wise, but good to know about.
