When My PC is booting into windows - after the welcome screen and just when the desktop appears, the monitor turns completely black - I see a few seconds of the desktop , it turns black again and then the booting has finished and the desktop appears as normal

Its a little alarming but anyone else seen this?

seen it a few times with CCC and drivers, but doesn't seem to happen so much with older control panel...

I'm running an oldish X800 Pro, and a 8500LE if that makes any difference

Yup its normal, its the CCC kicking in as if you notice when straight after it goes blank for a second the CCC icon appears in your system tray (ATi logo). :)

I hadnt but thank you - are ATI becoming more lax with the CCC, this shouldnt happen surely? It didnt with 6.7 or 6.5 as far as I remember

The Catalyst Control Centre is simply a horrendous piece of coding IMO, and whoever typed it should have their fingers cut off or squished in a vice. I strongly suggest trying out the Display/WDM Driver + ATI Tray Tools option, it loads instantly and has no memory footprint to speak of.

Crossfire doesnt work yet with Tray Tools - or is that the other ATI system tray applet?

Could be ATI Tray Tools as it doesn't support overclocking for the X1*** series yet either. Looks like you're stuck with that horrible Crapalyst Crap Control whatever. :(

It did, happens with all drivers, why shouldnt it happen, its only blanking for a milliesecond while the CCC kicks in and adjusts itself to your monitor.

I like it me, least it doesn't look like those old freescape games like Nvidias does, Driller anyone. :D

I disagree - My 9800 pro never flashed like this, when I had the 7900 GT it never flashed this badly either and I dont recall the 6.5 ever flashing like this?

What do you mean by 'flashed this badly', your monitor only goes blank for about a millisecond while the CCC kicks in , and its no bother as your machines still booting up.

Its just the same as when you change your refresh rate, the screen goes blank, and comes back on at the new refresh rate with a message asking if you want to keep like that, man i didnt know ppl got so incensed by that either. :D
