Help on 6 monitor setup.

UPDATED

Hey guys, Ok to update this thread, here is what I am currently looking at.

Currently I have 3 iiyama prolite 2710HDS and a 5770, Only 2 of which are in use via HDMI and DVI->HDMI adapter

I am going to purchase 3 more iiyama prolite 2710HDS and another graphics card to run those 3 monitors on eyefinity seperately, no crossfire.

My Shopping List:
  • 3 Iiyama Prolite 2710HDS
  • 2 Active Displayport to HDMI adapters (1 definately required)
[*]Second Graphics Card (Open to suggestions)

I am either going to get another 5770, which I know should work, or a better card to run as the primary for gaming, etc.

My PSU is a Corsair TX650W and the PC Spec is in my Sig (PC - A), does anyone see problems or have a good idea how far I can push that power supply with a second card.

Further exploration on this appreciated and thanks for the help and advice so far!:)

P.S. Apparently I can't change the original thread title on the forum, so it still says Single 6870! Sorry!

Original Question (6 Monitors on Single 6870)
My question is, does anyone know what i require to set this (6 monitors on a 6870) up exactly.
I have the following monitors. 6 x 27" iiyama 2710HDS
I am setting up a custom designed desk/wall mounting to house it all.. going to have HDMI switches to mix between other computers to.. but the main machine which will be running my work and games is the one i want the 6 monitors to all be on.
Edit: Im not hung up on gaming as the deciding factor for the card, and will probably game on 1920x1080 on a single monitor anyway.. Maybe i will get a 6970, the issue is how i cable and support the monitors on a single card.
I don't have the card yet, upgrading from a 5770 which came with the machine as part of one of the first i7 pre-builds at overclockers back in Dec 09.
I have the HDMI cables which are being integrated into the desk/wall mounting.. So the monitors will be connecting via HDMI somehow..
The question again.. What do I need here to make all 6 monitors connect via HDMI to my 6870, adaptors or some sort of hub to convery to DP ?
Anyone actually got this running?
Cheers guys.

Just look for a card with 6 outputs. It may be 2 DVI, 2 HDMI and 2 mini display port, or variations of, but there are cards out there with 6 outputs.

Looking at this - you will need two Displayport 1.2 MST Hubs to drive six monitors with that card.

Also, if you plan to game at 5760x2160 resolution, I would strongly suggest investing in a more powerful graphics card than a single HD 6870.

I'd go for a 6990 for a 6 monitor setup. At least if your wanting to play games I don't think a 6870 will cut it depending on if your into heavy duty games.

If your into stuff like CSS, TF2 basically valve games then your probably set.

Yeah im not hung up on gaming, and not on eyefinity, i need the desktop space for running labs and doing virtualisation / general works.

Games i would probably just play on a center monitor at 1920 x 1080 :)

Aye, that's the thing even configured independently (ie not eyefinity for gaming) you still need either a special card (like the HD 5870 eyefinity6) to output to six monitors or use a pair of those MST hubs with a DP 1.2 card (like the HD 6800 or 6900 cards).

Even the super top-end HD 6990 can only output to up to five monitors without the use of an MST hub.

That said, if you don't want to game that much then the simplest option is to buy a second card (a second HD 5770 would be great) and don't run it in crossfire - running the cards independently you can run three displays off each card and run all six of your monitors (though you will only be able to game on one). You just need to pick up a pair of active DP (or mini-DP) to DVI/HDMI adapters for ~£20 each and connect one display per card via the DP output.

Im liking this solution, at least till i get i do a full upgrade.

I currently have a 5770, reckon i could get a 6870, something with a little more power and run them independanty... 6870 primary and for gaming and the 5770 just for monitors and maybe rendering if i can use both without use of crossfire?

Pictures must be had of this when it is complete!

Will do, been years since i posted a "My Home Setup" thread here :)

Yea, that would work fine. The only reason I mentioned the 5770 was that it is currently £80. A HD 6870 will work fine in this role too.

May I ask what make and model PSU you are running?

Do you reckon there is enough for power left for an additional video card?
