Hey guys,

So been contemplating upgrading my motherboard & CPU,dont get me wrong my 3770K is still good but id like something with more cores, maybe 6 or even 10 for things like game engines (Dunia (FC5) engine).

Now ive been looking into the X79 platform at the 6 core Xeons,i know its an older platform but seems like used they could be pretty good bang for the buck?
Not fussed on XEON and not been able to OC or anything like that i dont mess with that stuff anyway just always preferred 100% stability over getting it as fast as possible.

But yeah what sorta upgrade path would u guys recommend,I know theres stuff like Ryzen out now but dont really fancy splashing out 400+ on a new platform because DDR4 memory is expensive, but want something with a bit more ooomppfff than my 3770K.

Appreciate any reples anyway,cheers. :)

Problem is that anything old/second hand for cheap likely doesn't give anything but marginal improvements from that.
Those old higher core count CPUs usually also had lowish clocks, so you might even get some performance drops.

And 10 cores won't bring anything to gaming, unless you want to play multiple games at once on difference monitors.
Because of Intel dragging dual cores in line up until now (ten+ years from when CPUs got four cores) we can only now start expecting majority of games to be able to properly use more than couple cores.

Also talking about upgrade path and Intel doesn't exactly fit well to same page, with Intel swapping CPU sockets constantly for no real changes in CPU.

if you can find a chip and an x79 board for sensible prices.
While a cheap xeon processor and x79 is a good idea, don't buy one of those cheap x79 boards from ebay unless you're prepared for
a) a long wait as it takes a boatride from Taiwan
b) no support or documentation when it goes wrong / doesnt work etc.
:D
Cos thats what I did...
