£600-£650 Spec Check please

its not that, its just getting less FPS by a long way with a lower resolution.

well the 2gb verson should only be used if going to be used for multimonitor right res, witch it was designed for.

otherwise it just defeats the point of the 1gb, so im not supprised the 1gb performse better on a single monitor

i understand that more memory than 1GB is only really beneficial on a crazy high resolution, or multiple monitors. What i dont understand is why reducing the resolution, and therefore reducing the amount of memory and processing needed, results in a 60% drop in FPS. it only happens on battleforge, so im putting it down to a problem with the game with that particular card

i do believe that almost all 6950's will unlock

Edit : but please wait for Stulid or another experianced person to conform tho please

All i know is, this isnt the only forum with a ATi 6950 to 6970 unlock thread, and that I have seen mentioned the 1GB unlocked by users(but most people buy 2Gb cards anyway, so the number of people with 1GB cards is low anyway), but there are non reference pcb's out there.

+1 its a good conclusion, concidering that theirs more differances then just a simple 1gb extra, it maybe the support for that game and graphics card was very litle, refuring back to what u said :)

Get the 2gb version if you can, games are becoming even more Vram hungry nowadays, some games easily use up 1gb on a 1080p monitor.

Cheers for all the replies guys.

I wanted to get a retail version of Windows 7 for in case I upgrade quite a few bits in the future, I can then install the same copy of Windows on a new PC. I understand that with an OEM copy of 7 it wont like too much getting upgraded and I will have to buy another OEM copy for a new PC.

Not a fan of the low wattage be quiet PSU as it doesn't leave much room for attaching more stuff to it later on. Plus, I looked at a review of it and the naked wires look nasty to work with.

Might just get a 6950 instead of the 5850 so my brother can use his machine for quite a while.

It's going to be better than mine now :(

if you really want a better system then his, just wait till he next does his upgrades befor you do yours, then you will have more cash to upgrade (assuming you both put aside the same amount for upgrades per set time)

btw appologys for the hijack of your post

edit: im not to sure, but i think the OEM windows is tied to the motherbored, so maybe u can upgrade otherthings but not the motherbored... its a good motherbored anyways

btw you should ask someone who knows for sure how pc upgrading works with OEM and retail.

Yeah, I think the OEM version is tied to the motherboard. I've managed to find a retail copy of 7 for £110 so I've just bought that (helping out my brother a bit as it's his first proper PC so he has saved up for ages bless haha). Might charge his £50 for it :P

Could also save him a bit by just giving him my 8800gts and buying a 570 for myself...That might be a bit cheeky though.

hey... free cards, he cant complain right? then again i would be a bit dissapointed if i saved up for ages and it couldnt play all my fav games at hight settings

you may as well save up a bit more and wait till the next gen of GTX comes out then get your self a GTX 580 whilest their cheap when a lot of people change to the next gen

i personly dont understand the upgrade everytime theirs something new, but oh well

Yeah I know what you mean. I talked to him and he said for the time being he is OK with inheriting my 8800GTS as my comp plays all the games he wants to play at good fps. (He will get better performance out of his new one as I am currently on an Asus A8n32 sli deluxe coupled with an opteron 170 @ 2.7Ghz :D)

Don't think I can quite stretch for a 580. I cant really be bothered waiting for the next gen cards as the GTX 600 series is coming out Q3-Q4 this year isn't it?

I think I'll see what the gpu deals are like when I get round to ordering the kit for my brother.

Thanks folks

your welcome (not that i did much) and im sure if u just save enought and wait a litle bit you could probly get one, thier more likly to outlast the 570gtx, just as the 8800gts outlasteted just about everything back in the day... be some time befor the gtx 580 will be outdated, but cant say it like the 570gtx aint going to last

i know how hard it is to wait, i got to wait and save my cash till iv sold all the stuff i dont use so i can get a much needed upgrade, i share you pain of immpatients
