Thanks :) hybrid i do need a case as my current case isn't good for ventilation so how much would a decent case cost? also i do not need delivery charges as I live within 4 miles of OC :) which one would you recommend for a gaming system?

I love that you've asked for advice on an upgrade and not told us what you are upgrading from...

:D

well im upgrading from an ageing pentium d @3ghz, 4 ddr2 667 mhz and 8500gt :) so anything is better than my current system. i dont actually know what resolution im gaming at as my comp has broke :/ i think it was 1280 x 800 but im not too sure.

Either of Lemin's cases are solid options- personally I'd go for the 430 as I find it silly to spend on a case what I could on better graphics, but the 690 is worth the extra money, so I hear.

At 1280 x 800 you could afford to have a much less powerful graphics card (say the 5670, which would mean you could get a cheaper PSU too), however my advice to you would be to go for the 6850 and see if you can get a new 1900x1200 monitor for Christmas, or save up for it in the new year. Make it your new year's resolution :)

Indeed, treat yourself to a new screen, playing on a 24" widescreen is a whole new experience imo. :) upgraded a few years back and I can't imagine using my old 19" AOC screen now.

Dell screens have a great reputation if you're worried about brands, but most monitors should be fine. Without going into too much detail, get yourself a TN film screen unless you'd use wide viewing angles. TN technology is *much* cheaper than the alternatives and provides a great standard for gaming.

Apart from that, just get a screen between 21 and 24 inches, with a max resolution of 1900x1200 or 1900x1080. It's the standard gaming resolution now and you'll really notice the difference.

Hmm.

Only just finished reading an article titled: 'How to build a £600 Gaming PC'

Lets see if I can find it again.

Here you go, see what you make of it...

You could buy the OcUK pre overclock bundles and take it from there.

It's a fair article, but why on earth they use the i3 is beyond me- admittedly it's a damn good chip overclocked to awesome levels, but games that use more than two cores are pretty common now (inc all xbox 360 ports), so it's just not up to scratch any more. For ~£30 more than their bundle, you can get an i5 at stock speeds (again with RAM and mobo), and it'll struggle a lot less, and have future overclocking potential when you need it.

Also, the 6870 is pretty much overkill for gaming right now. The 6850 is a good margin cheaper, and while benchmarks may favour the 6870, the 6850 can max out settings on all but a couple of games at 1900x1080.. A few extra sparkles on a couple of games hardly seems worth the extra dosh.

Also, sign that these people know absolutely nothing:
If you wanted to have less of a gaming orientated system and something that was merely alright, then you could switch this out for a GTX460, but you would compromise gaming performance and that's the key we're going for, hence the use of the HD6870.

OcUK is currently selling the HAWK Talon Attack for the same price as the standard HAWK, so there's no reason not to get that instead since that has a cherry-picked core, and higher default clock.

Or if you are ordering soon (before 24th)

Surely this is better then any GTX 460

Yea I myself pre-ordered that 5850. But it would really depends on how soon the OP need the new build...if he could wait for the 5850, and he could consider that. But GTX460 HAWK Talon Attack is good as well...GTX470 speed out of the box (with factory overclock to 810MHz), and pretty much guaranteed to overclock to 950MHz since it has a cherry picked core, whereas the 5850 overclocking would still largely depend on if we land a good core or a poor core. I would be disappointed if the 5850 I pre-order cannot overclock to 900MHz, especially when some people managed 1,000MHz.
