My lecturer is looking for a new rig but isn't sure what to get. He wants it pre-built which I know OC staff can do for a small fee but yeah.

Usage: Light gaming (happy to drop settings, probably will be on 1080p still), programming (mainly python), other software like MatLab/Simulink.

He's not a fan of AMD/ATI so please recommend Intel only systems (I know, I know).

Was thinking of something along the lines of:
4690k
GTX 960 4GB
16GB -whatever RAM-
550W PSU (unsure what to go for)
and completely unsure about what mobo.
1TB HDD will be sufficient. He's not after an SSD as of yet so said a 1TB will do him fine as he'll save stuff externally.

Needs a standard optical drive. No peripherals or monitor needed, or OS - for now.

16gb ram not needed really knock it down to 8 and upgrade in the future when needed and cheaper.

money can be invested elsewhere that way.

I did offer, but I know they'd do a better job with the cabling at and whatnot than I would (only ever built 2 rigs before, mine and a friend's. Not been untidy, but they won't be to his standard, I know that much!) but yeah. I'd imagine he has a bit of give in his budget, but he's been looking at pre-builds and I've told him to stray from that if he wants to get something worth his money!

Thanks Extreme.

Any way of having it Intel/nVid for around £600? He's pretty adamant he doesn't want an AMD card lol

If he wants something similar this is the Nvidia card to go with:
My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £179.89
(includes shipping: £9.90)

Personally I wouldn't go with that card since it has less performance and for the same price you can get a 4GB R9 380 which performs about 6% better, I would go with the card below but it's his choice

Yeah I already explained to him that he'd have to fork out more if he wants to go Intel/nVidia but he said he doesn't get on with AMD at all. He's not a fanboy he just wants to go that way because of previous experiences I guess. Thanks again though, I'll try get him to understand he'll get notably better performance if he goes with a 380! :)

SSD's are pretty much a must buy these days.

Why not just go for a 256gb if he's saving externally? Seems even less reason to go for a 1tb mech drive.

This. A system with a SSD will feel much snappier (and therefore not seem so "budget") than a large mechanical drive.

I was personally thinking that about the SSD. Looks like I'm gonna have to have a chat with him come Monday! He's an awesome bloke, just a shame he's leaving come the new year (I go to college in 2 week blocks every 6 weeks or so as I'm an apprentice) but yeah! I'll inform him further.

Any other component recommendations? As I said, he can stretch his budget for sure, but probably not much past £700 for what he'd ultimately want. :)
