Hi there

Already have decent power supply (enermax 620w) and case (silverstone Temjin) I now need:

1 Processor
1 Motherboard
4 Gb Ram
1 Windows Vista 64

No Vista Ultimate 64 costs £130 so I have £470 which I may aswell call £500 to spend on the rest.

What should I go for?

Here hows this:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard

Noctua NH-U12F Heatsink.

As for the Memory, its a bit debatable at the moment to be honest.

Of course theirs the Crucial Memory:

But this Geli Memory looks pretty nice too:

or this:

Maybe someone as can poke their nose in, whas other people views on the first choice of Geli Memory?

I'd normally suggest picking the Ram as 2x2gb, generally the fewer sticks of Ram the better and this OCZ is at a good price. Do check that the CPU cooler will fit into the case though. Also this is rather obvious but might be overlooked, is your graphics card PCI-E? :)

Forgot to mention I need to memory in 2x 2gb so I have got the room to go to 8gb in the near future!

Yes processor and mobo look good so far!

is your graphics card PCI-E?

----------------------------

no its an old AGP thingy magig. But utilising your spec I would have a few bob left over to buy a new graphics card. I was going to spend approx £200 on that seperately in a couple of weeks!

Since your graphics card is AGP and you don't want to spend a huge amount on the graphics card just now I'd suggest a 7300GT, should come in at ~£30 so still under budget but would allow you to get started plus is good for a spare if you have a problem with your main graphics card. :)

Hmm, liking it - mouth watering and money burning a hole in my pocket - never considered one of those Xeon quad core cpu's had my mind set on the E6600 but I guess the Xeon is much better?

I guess that noctua cooler is the one people go for now?

What is this system to be used for mainly? The Xeon is good of course but not everything uses quad core yet, in fact most software is only just starting to take account of dual core properly. If you don't upgrade often though going for quad core might well be worth it. :)

Either that or the Tuniq Tower as being in the group of the best air coolers at a reasonable price.

I do quite a bit of graphic design, photoshop, quark and illustrator work. I play WOW quite a lot and wouldn't mind having a little blast on that Supreme Commander that everyone is raving about.

After this, I probably wouldnt see myself upgrading for at least 18 months.

In your case quad core is quite probably worthwhile then since you aren't a frequent upgrader and your uses are fairly demanding. I think Supreme Commander may be best left to when you get the new graphics card though, you don't want to make the 7300GT cry. ;)

Thanks for the responses, going to put my order in on Monday, after some consideration over the weekend. I take it the Noctua is still the best cooling for the Quad core? Also I take it I wont have any probs with those components and Vista 64?

Yeah going to spend at least £200 at the end of the month on the GPU. The Nvidia 8800 GTS? or that ATI flagship for £250?
