Lo all, a mate has asked me to source him some bits for a new build but I'm up to my eyes in work.

Can someone spec me a £600 build.

No OS
No keyboard
No screen/monitor
No mouse

it'll be used for gaming and a little bit of photoshopping. Hoping an i5 sandy chip is in there and a 560 card or 6870 if poss...ta :)

There's plenty of rigs around that config that have been specced lately.

I'm sure there's someone who can do better than this...

Also, who's Sulid :p? I know a Stulid but... ;)

will you be ordering on your own account or his, and does he get free shipping?

this is what i came up with:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail with FREE TrackMania 2 Canyon PC Game £173.99
1 x OcUK GeForce GTX 560Ti 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **Supplied with FREE Batman: Arkham City PC game** £169.99
1 x Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard ** LOWEST UK PRICE ** £99.98
1 x Lepa W-Series 500W '80 Plus' Power Supply £46.99
1 x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT51264BA160A) £39.98
1 x BitFenix Merc Alpha Gaming Case - Black £32.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £29.99
1 x LG GH22NS70 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99
Total : £610.91 (includes shipping: FREE).

only reason for the RAM change over stulids is to make sure it doesnt interfere with future coolers. if your not able to get free shipping then drop it down to 4GB RAM

with a PSU change you can do crossfire/SLI with this

Its must get pretty toasty in there with its lack of fans, the Zalamn Z9 has three:)

And the timings on the Ripjaws are better.

ok, so its not as good a case as the zalman, i figured that one out when i saw the price difference. i needed somewhere to make up the difference in price of the motherboards and that was it. if there was room in the budget for the zalman i'd go for it

i also explained my reasoning for the RAM change, since RAM timings make almost no difference (certainly no noticeable difference) on sandybridge builds i figured better compatibility with coolers was the next most important thing (they both run at voltages sandybridge motherboards are happy with)

*edit*
aha, heres the review i was looking for:

The RAM guides say modest RAM timings, not ancient ones from 5years ago. I wont be suggest that RAM anymore CL10 timings is naff.

thats fine by me, but im still going to recommend it (and hasnt stopped you recommending it in the past up until now). nothing wrong with CL10 by the looks of things

I only recommended it when it was dirt cheap, my own testing on my own sandybridge system shows the difference the CL9/CL10 and I will keep bringing it up then. Why get worse stuff for the same price point?

because some coolers will not fit with the ripjaws. i was trying to keep the upgrade options as open as possible

still havent got round to reading your review, so didnt know you had tested the CL9 vs CL10 yourself

Well thats not strictly true because most motherboards will boot-up with the RAM in slot 2+4 (2nd and 4th away form the cpu) so giving much more clearance, both my socket1155 do.

Doing it now, with that master of overclocking competition, the difference in CPU scores just by changing the timings is very noticeable

Well you asked for sulid but got stulid instead........which was nice ;)

I would agree with stulid. I see what reaper means about the heatspreaders but spec'ing 2x4GB RAM sticks resolves that tbh. I can't see the system needing anymore added, if the OP could only afford 2x2GB of RAM reapers argument would make more sense.

If you can get better CAS rated RAM for the same price you should buy it, a no brainer really. The OP needs to understand that there are weekly as well as daily offers so the spec can change slightly depending on what's being offered.
