Modular PSU, which can be a god send in midi tower case when it comes to cable management. I've done lots of Xmas builds with the Zalman Z9 U3 case (its sadly not stocked here) which is my fav budget gaming case. I've used the merc beta before it's not great to be honest and only comes with 1 fan. This Asgard Pro has 2 fans

The PSU is modular, but it's pretty new so no reviews on it yet. The case is an area which needs a bit of improvement, might try and persuade him towards the Zalman Z9 plus?

And good shout on the HDD Bacon

I have the Z9 plus. I suggest the U3 version as it has USB3 ports at the front and a proper window, the Z9 plus has mostly mesh on the side panel and no USB3 ports at the front. The P&C PSU is a rebranded seasonic I do believe, so is a very nice PSU.

Ok, a little update to this.

Managed to find a Bitfenix Colossus for £75 new, which my buddy likes, so he's gone with that.

Now, the remainder of the budget is £600-£630 for the tower excluding case and OS. This computer is PURELY for gaming, he has a laptop for Uni work etc.

I've come up with the following:

YOUR BASKET
1 x HIS HD 7950 IceQ BOOST 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (H795QC3G2M) £239.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £167.99
1 x Asus P8Z77-V LX2 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £69.98
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020059-UK) £49.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) HDD £47.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX16C9T3K2/8X) £35.99
Total : £623.93 (includes shipping : £10.00).

Is there any way of making this better for the price?

Stulids build is nice (no surprises there), shame that Gigabyte mobo is voltage locked which limits the overclocking potential of the i5K

1 x MSI GeForce GTX 660Ti Black Knight OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £215.99

1 x **B Grade** Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard with FREE BOOGIE BUG XXL GAMING MOUSE MAT £80.00
1 x Silverstone Strider Plus 500W Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (SST-ST50F-P) £67.99
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 1TB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA100) HDD £54.98
1 x Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX16C9T3K2/8X) £35.99

Mobo is B grade but an excellent mobo as i'm sure you know, best to check what comes with it. Double the HDD capacity and more cache, the OCZ 550W PSU is ok and would get the price down to £630 but I'd sooner take the silverstone over it.
