Getting a new rig next week - 2500k / Corsair 600T / 850 PSU / Z68

Have a max budget of £600.00

What's my best options for BF3 ?

Thanks

Just wondering do all the connections for X/fire SLI come with the cards ?

SLI connectors come with the motherboard.

Crossfire connectors should come with the graphics card but a couple of people have reported not receiving them.

I might have suggested 2 Sapphire HD 6950 TOXICs as they have a very good chance of unlocking the extra shaders. However the price at OcUK has gone from £240 to £280 in a very short space of time no doubt due to there only being a few left.

+1. Apparently the same might be possible for the MSI Twin Frozr IIIs, which are a bit more affordable and might overclock higher due to the twin fan cooling solution. :)

A shame as the TOXIC was much easier to unlock.

A flick of a switch with no BIOS flashing required.

I've recently been mulling over buying 2 Toxics or Twin Frozr IIIs and I went for the MSI cards in the end. Not only is the cooling slightly better than the Toxics, but they have the possibility to unlock with the flick of a switch also - and if it doesn't work you still get the unlocked overclocking ability to push them beyond their normal limits, so I thought it was a pretty good deal in the end - I got them for £200 a pop.

It seems that it really is the luck of the draw to get a non laser cut GPU these days though, so I'm not expecting mine to unlock. I am however hoping to get them to 950Mhz a piece. :)

Saying that, AMD recently demoed their 28nm laptop GPU again recently, and according to Anandtech, is still on track to release cards in some form this year, so it could be worth waiting if you can.

Unfortunately my 5870 is quickly dying so I need a replacement now.

I'm 99.9% certain the TF III's don't unlock at a flick of the BIOS switch.

I'm pretty sure that what it does is switch beetween BIOS's with different fan profiles (performance/silent).

You will need to flash the BIOS to try and unlock the cards.

FYI there is a small chance of bricking your card attempting a BIOS flash.

Buy a box of matches , burn copy of BF3 and save £599.86:eek:

Sorry so sick of seeing all these threads BF3 this and that and upgrade this and that. There is something like 40 threads in pc games and about 20 or so in GPU asking the same stuff over and over.

Mods can we just have a BF3 section in each relevant forum section. :p

No none of them unlock anymore, the new laser cut ones anyway. The msi dude on the forum had a lot of crap over it and MSi pulled the plug on their website guide on how to unlock the TF3.
They do run cool but from what i've read online and my own experience it seems most won't get past 950mhz the best overclocking 6950 and 6970's so far are the Asus direct cu's which are often hitting over 1000mhz core clocks

Don't read the posts then.

There still seem to be a few cards out there which will unlock but there's no way of knowing which ones they are.

Posted 5 October 2011 here:

the HIS 6950 2GB unlocked fine for me,( IceQ X Turbo 2048MB ) I purchased my first one a couple of weeks ago, and this is unlocked now :).

I was going to order the MSI 6950 on this week only, but wasn't sure if this would unlock fine so decided on another HIS card :D

better to go with what I know, and I know the HIS is fine for unlocking even the latest batch.

When the second one turns up tomorrow hopefully i'll let you know how it goes.

No news on the second card though.

They are supposed to unlock along with the performance settings, but it's not guaranteed.

If that doesn't work, flashing can sometimes do the trick, apparently.

That is what I've read from users on other forums.

I don't know what you've read on other forums but if you look on this forum they've had to be BIOS flashed.

See this thread where the MSI rep. (and they should know) gave instructions on how to flash the cards but this was withdrawn when later cards wouldn't unlock:

*** MSI 6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition - How To Unlock The Power ***

And there's this thread where Jay794 bricked their TF III trying to unlock it:
