A frined has been holding out for Haswell and has now put together the following, what do you thinnk of the below?

General PC use, no plans to game (as yet), although he'll be video editing.

Does anyone know what the stock cooler is like? No plans to overclock but no one likes a load cooler...(will be used with Windows 8 64bit)

I would if doing HD video editing using Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere, then you'll want an Nvidia GTX series card too. Just for the CUDA acceleration, which makes everything a lot faster.

Hello All, I'm going to hit buy on the spec listed above tomorrow (might change the SSD), unless anyone can convince me otherwise?

Does anyone have any view on the intel Stock cooler with Haswell, is it noisy or will it be fine at stock volts etc?

Cheers

Theres a few things I would alter as the weekly offers have changed,

Hopefully someone will do this for you.

I would seriously change the SSD to a 840 Pro which has write speeds similar to read (500+) which is something that the editing package will be doing a lot (writing back to the disk). Also opt for the i7, software like Premiere and the like will take advantage of extra threads.

Motherboard choice is personal I suppose, but I have always gone with either Gigabyte or Asus.

I use my computer for media authoring too as well as gaming and haven't upgraded since 2008, so I started a thread on here a few days ago and had loads of help. As you'll see from the spec on OP I have changed some of the components and the price has crept up, but it's a treat for myself! :o)

If the budget is strict, then it's pretty much a good spec, oh and what Chazhurst said about the nVidia and CUDA - it will make a difference.

stock cooler is a standard intel affair very tiny and awful looking like something which should be attached to a 10 year old gpu.

These chips also run pretty hot I had 50c under load @ stock with the sr1 cooler that comes free with one of the gigabyte boards I bet with the intel cooler you would see 70-80c

OK (Thanks), which cooler would you (or anyone) recommend?

Cheers

any of the £20-£30 coolers that fit socket 1156 or 1150 should be good

Heres the intel stock cooler for the 4670k next to my old am3 motherboard which has a cooler about the same size as the free gigabyte one I'm using.

look how tiny and pathetic that intel thing is, would you really want that keeping your shiny new cpu cool? it looks like the sort of thing motherboards used to have cooling the north bridge lol

For video editing you are going to want to get as much as possible from your cpu and as you are still in budget of £600 due to it being in the weekly sale you might as well bump your CPU to a i5 4670k only adds +£30

In terms of cheeper coolers you can't go wrong with a CM Hyper 212+ adding +£26.99

As he has no plans on OCing and with a B67M mobo, no point in getting a K chip. If the OP wishes, he could get the non K version and still be under his budget. But I suppose it all depends on how much video editing his friend does. Also noticed, there has been no mention of an OS.

For the £6 even if he didn't plan to overclock, it would at least give him the choice later down the line. Good point on the OS, can't imagine his friend video editing on a linux distro as both sony vegas and premier pro don't run on it.

Currently he has Vista, he's still undecided between Windows 7 or 8 both 64bit...(after a quick look its still possible to find the odd a upgrade offer)

"...and with a B67M", if he did through a little more cash (small amount) what would be a better Motherboard in terms of Overclocking?

Thanks
