This is what I will be putting together for a friend wanting to get into PC gaming but it will also be used for everything else he does. I am throwing in a Xigmatek Achilles CPU cooler which is what the fan is for. Let me know if you would suggest anything else instead for the price:

Personally the rig I'd go for if I was spending £600ish...

It might seem like a big price difference for the Sandy Bridge chip, however it'll last a *lot* longer before he has to upgrade again. The Phenom II X4 at it's max overclock (~4GHz) won't even touch the SB i5 at stock speeds.

Hey! I'm also thinking about building a rig around the region of £600 and I definitely agree with Redmint about Sandy Bridge! Definitely the way to go... my build is not *hugely* different from the above only that I've changed the PSU for a non modular, less powerful one but I believe its easily good enough to power a 6850 and an i5 which don't draw much power. Also its from *B grade stock* which makes it a good deal! I've also opted for an Antec 300 cause I've used it before and its simply brilliant in terms of cooling + looks! Thats my opinion anyway!

I would also go for something along the sandybridge route

Yeah I agree the pricing is not ideal but there isn't a whole lot of choice for quality cases around the £50 mark... jst thought that the Antec 300 would do an admirable job and it fitted in nicely with the budget. I would also recommend the CM 690 II lite... superb case its just a matter of weather he wants to spend an extra £10 which Isn't a lot for what your getting...

Antec 100 looks good too... superb budget case!

Looks like the £600 mark spec is quite popular today. Did a spec for a Sandy Bridge build for a colleague a little earlier today and came up with the following;

  • Intel Core i5-2500K (1155)
  • Gigabyte GA P67A UD4
  • 4GB Corsair DDR3 RAM 1600 [cpu/mobo/ram bundle] £353.99

  • Asus GeForce GTX 460 TOP 768MB NVIDIA Graphics Card £107.99

  • Sony AD-5260S-0B 24x DVD-SM Internal SATA Drive / Black £10.99

    Total Price; £ 595.49

few items from OcUK and few from elsewhere...sorry :(
