£600 to spend on base unit only...

I'd get an I3 mate, from the research i've done you can get an i3 and honsetly it will still blitz through anything (ive played boad company beta on my mates i3 with 5850, eating it alive @ 1900x1200) you can later upgrade to an i5 or i7 860 with the same MOBO ram etc etc if you start to struggle (i doubt that)

also i would go with a 5770 card at that resolution but a 5850 would be a great addition also

Personally i would go with an am3 dual core with the opportunity to upgrade to a quad or even a six core at a later date when needed if you want future proofing. If you want top performance right now intel seems to be the way to go (dependant on task, e.g. gaming there is a very little difference between them in the majority of games).

Oki doki...

I went for this little lot in the end...

I guess I will get some cash back from my 939 4800+ which I didn't expect and the new rig should be much better than my old one...

Too late to change now but have I got a good'ish system for occasional gaming, browsing, porn watching and playing music etc?

And atleast I get a chance at having a new OS so it will feel like a really new PC.
