Hello my 1st post.

I need a new pc from the bottom up.

I recently bought the 1st piece a ANTEC 1050B case

Now I have the old AMD/INTEL problem as everyone else but I only have 600€ max to spend (thats my upper limit prefer only spending 500€)

Anyway i've sourced these products for the moment.

OPTIONAL
Harddisk WESTERN DIGITAL 250GB-KS 16MB SATA300 7200RPM 63

Total Price for intel spec 833.5 (233.5 overbudget)

As you can see the difference between the cheapest intel board and that of AMD is 187€ is it worth spending the extra 187€ for a conroe?

The prices between AMD and conroe in belgium are 148 3800X2 235 E6300.

The mobos for AM2 are plentiful in the 60-100€ bracket I've not seen anything here for that price from Intel?

Both rigs will serve you well. Ultimately, the conroe rig offers better bang for bucks and is futureproof, however, if your budget is a strict one then its AMD all the way (and you won't be disappointed).

Um, Conroe is more future proof? I'm not so sure about that... AM2 is a newer socket and will last throughout 2007 until the AM3 procs come along, which are even backward compatible with AM2! and intels 775 has been going for quite a while...

i'm now thinking of going AM2 as I can't really go conroe with my budget. the basic cpu/mobo is too expensive.

I was wondering if a AM2 64 Athlon with 2GB mem is better than a
3800+ X2 with 1 GB mem.

It's more future proof in the fact that spending £150 beats the current £600 AMD. And the current £600 AMD is pretty future proof if you ask me.

Either is very good. You will have top performance from both. A system like that will serve you well for years. The Intel Conroe solution will have an advantage in benchmarking, however the difference in standard applications will not be significant.

Informed PC consumers like us are currently experiencing a revelation when it comes to pricing. We are getting a lot for our money :)

just phoned OC and they can't hold orders I'm off for 2 weeks on holiday so i'll have a rethink when i get back. There might be other mobos for Conroe when I return (17th August) so perhaps things will have changed.

I hope I can still get that nice cheap X1900XT then
