Hello,

I’ve been asked to build a machine for someone and I’ve been running in circles looking at components especially as it’s not going to be my machine. It’s intended to be a decent starter desktop PC for single screen gaming, therefore needs to be reasonably balanced but upgradeable should the gaming take off.

What is giving me pause for thought is what graphics card would people suggest? In place of the 750Ti, the 4670K is likely overkill and could be downgraded to an i5 4430, losing the ability to overclock but still retaining 4 cores, and funds used to get a GTX 760.

Parts list so far:-

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £169.99
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 750Ti OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (N750Ti-2GD5/OC) £99.95
1 x Asus Z87-K Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £91.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3B1K2/8GX) £65.99

the 280x with the FX-8320 will be superb for gaming.

You won't get a lot of overclocking action on the CPU with the DS3P mobo. If you're planning to overclock the CPU, go for the 970a-UD3P

Hello,

First thing to say is a big thanks to the number of responses to this post in such a short time.

I must admit to a preference for Intel as opposed to AMD, as I have built a fair few Intel based systems with the last one being an i5 4670K based system with a GTX 760. So I'm used to the Intel side of the shop which might sound a bit thick headed :) I'll probably stick to it especially as this won't be my machine.

I have looked at the other suggestions and will take them on board to trim a few £'s here and there which might free up enough cash for a GTX 760. Otherwise looking at benchmarks the R7 265 does tend to do better vs the 750Ti sometimes by quite a margin, the R9 270X is just about in budget.
