One of my work mates its looking for a new PC. He currently has a really old laptop that is good for office work at the most.

He's looking to get a new PC so that he can do some gaming and learn some new things in 3D Studio Max.

Now I know he should really have a FirePro/Quadro card for using 3DSMax but that just not going to happen as he doesn't have the budget. As for gaming as long as it can run most modern games on medium settings he will be happy with that.

His budget is £600, but he may be able to spend more.

He's looking for the PC and monitor.

Again I know for this price it wont be greatest machine in the world but it will be a big step up from his current laptop.

Ideally he would like it to have 16GB RAM in for using 3DSMAX. Also an Nvidia card as it has CUDA cores so I'm guessing 3DSMAX and Photoshop can utilise them?

Just spoke to my friend, the price of the monitor can be separate so that's more to play with for the spec of the rig.

Anyone able to help? Just the most powerful machine for that price?

The first is weighted more towards gaming. The second more towards rendering.

Neither have a mechanical storage drive so that's one of the first things he should get when he has the cash. But 256GB is enough to get him started.

Can bring it closer to budget by going for a B85 or H81 motherboard but H97 will be better.

PSU is budget but it brings 3-year warranty and I'm pretty impressed with EVGA's budget PSU offerings so far (compared to others out there). If it provides the power to the system that can be squeezed in for the rest of the money, well and good. No overclocking so that will help.
