Films are a lot more jerky in motion than tv breakfast shows etc. Likewise with behind the scene segments in films, they dont look real.

With games I think the same applies. With ridge racer at 60fps it doesn't look real where as I bet Colin Mcrae Dirt you get the reality effect.

Looks more real to me, silky smooth just like real life, the fact that your eyes can tell the difference shows you that 25fps is much jerkier and is much less real. Our eyes see at a much higher effective framerate than even 100fps, though of course we don't see in frames.

I don't really care either way tbh.

I'd rather the games just looked good full stop.

PGR3 is 30fps isn't? That being the case, I prefer the way PGR3 looks at 30fps to how Forza 2 looks at 60fps. Nothing to do with the frame rate, more the level of detail that can be achieved at 30fps over what can be done at 60.

The thing is though in Forza when you go to the race cars you think 'Bugger me this is fast' on PGR, although it still feels kinda fast, it doesn't quite hit you the same way.

Has the sensation of speed got anything to do with the frame rate though?

I can think of PS1/PS2 games that 'felt' fast as you were hitting the top speeds.

Smoother yes, quicker? Or at least noticably quicker?

Is every version of Burnout in 60fps then? Because there can't be many racing games with a greater sensation of speed.

60fps is necessary for the correct "feel" in a racer. It will never feel real as real racing is an enormous shock to your system as it constantly attacks every sense you have.

You are right; fps is about smoothness, not 'speed' as such. A realistic driving game like Forza should never feel as fast as Burnout Revenge for example, and I wouldn't want it to.
