Well its almost 2 years since i parted with my well earned cash for my current build.

Just wondering is the 6300 'out of date' of does it have plenty of life left in it with all the new games coming out? It is currently clocked at 3ghz.

I was running one on my old rig, handled everything fine that I threw at it including Crysis and Stalker etc... I reckon its got a hell of a lot more life in it yet personally

Yep it still has life left in it, at least enough for the current generation of applications/games (that is overclocked at 3Ghz minimal though).

It will hold its own fine till the next upgrade,
What's the rest of your current gear ?
Then we can think of what will be the best buy.

Got one in this machine & it holds well very in all kinds of programs, encoding videos, music, playing games, watching HD content. Brilliant CPU!

Not old by any means, well for me at least. still running at 3.2Ghz rock solid for nearly 2 years now. Apart from crysis, and if memory serves me well, i have had no problem in running the latest games all cranked up. I still recommend this gem of a cpu to anyone who wants a great upgrade from their old p4s or amds. :)

Well I wouldnt buy one if I was going to upgrade from old stuff just now due to them being very expensive, you can get E7200 for same price which will probably be a bit better :).

But yeh if you still got one and thinking of an upgrade, don't bother, they are still very good CPUs and up to task with everything.

i brought a p45 asus board recently as i moved from amd

got a e6300 off the mm and it clocked easily to 3GHz

i was using it originally as a stopgap until i could afford a wolfdale/quad

but now im keeping it in for a bit
sticking some WC in there - going to see if i can push it a bit further
then maybe get an upgrade further down the line

it has handled all my current stuff fine so i see no reason to upgrade

and for a £25 second hand processor - that is pretty good

^Agreed with that, you always want the latest core and fastest clock speed you can but an E6300 @ 3ghz is a tasty CPU still.
Save the cash and opt for a newer motherboard/gpu/more memory, if you feel like an upgrade.

In the meantime, your E6300 will still have life left in it. Not bad considering how long you've had it. :)

newer board P35 or X38\48 over 3.7ghz is possible, mine did nearly 3.7 on air with low volts, abit hot but did it, under my currrent water, lapped and with decent memory, reckon I could get beyond 3.8ghz.
If I hadn't put one of my worm drive clips around the wrong wrong I would try it, cant be bothered to take the board out and drain the coolant, just to move the clip round on the mosfet block.
Maybee one day I will be tempted as it is always nagging me with wonder what I could achieve with my 6300.
I guess I get lucky as my current Q9300 clocks really well, does just under 3.7ghz (490)

I would still have my 6300 but for the fact i got a good deal at work on a cheap Q6600.

I would have thought you still have quite a bit left in it.

The e6300 was a great chip. Used to have mine 24/7 at 3150mhz and at 3570mhz for benches all on air. I recommend you lap the chip as well and then pump the volts through. As long as it doesnt go over 65-70C under load its fine. Frankly I found it a waste of money upgrading to an e8400@4ghz for an additional £80.

Unless you really want to go quadcore or have the money to spend, you may as well wait for nehalem.

my 6300 will be replaced by Nehalem, bought it on launch day nearly 2 years ago with the rev1 DS3 and it the setup is 100% solid. I have money to upgrade but will hold on until nehalem launch time.
