64 Bit Enhanced Games?

As in better frame rates etc...?

I was kinda hoping for a list of games that gave increased draw distances, enhanced textures blah blah...

I know far cry does this enhanced textures etc etc ...read it on gamespot

Tropical beaches, swaying palm trees, and machine-gun-toting bad guys look much better when processed by a 64-bit CPU. That's what AMD, Ubisoft, and Crytek say about their newest update to the popular PC shooter Far Cry. The 64-bit update patch, available on GameSpot DLX, will speed up and enhance the visuals of Far Cry for players who own an AMD Athlon 64 FX processor.

"There are specific enhancements we wanted to create, like view distances, texture details, map sizes, and graphics, that 32-bit platforms could not handle," said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. "What is most eye-opening about the 64-bit Far Cry is that we are only now beginning to tap into the potential power of the AMD64 platform."

64-bit-enabled players of Far Cry will be privy to larger and more detailed areas to explore, exclusive 64-bit maps, longer view distances, unique and exciting game object textures, and a 64-bit exclusive "barrel storage area" that demonstrates impressive, lifelike physics.

Crytek and Ubisoft have also released an exclusive content upgrade, which includes two new levels--stronghold and gorge--available only to AMD64 systems. It is also available on GameSpot DLX..

Far Cry was developed by freshman German game studio Crytek. The company was founded in 1999 to build the CryEngine, which powers Far Cry. Far Cry was published by Paris-based Ubisoft.

Chronicles of Riddick. It performs slower in 64-bit mode however, so I wouldn't recommend it.

To be honest, for gaming there isn't really a bit gain from 64-bit at present. People buy 64-bit cpus because they happen to be fast at 32-bit games, generally speaking.

Well really there's no technical reason 64 bit enabled games should have any extra stuff. Anything that can be done on 64 bit can be done on 32 bit, it's just that a game optimised for 64 bit can run a bit better.

I've seen it run on windows 32bit and on a 32bit proc iirc.

Ran it myself on windows xp pro, with a 64bit amd.

It doesn't "NEED" 64bit anything. Market hype.

the normal 32bit game of course runs under 32bit. but with the two A64 updates, the 64bit version runs only under a 64 bit environment. the 32bit version isnt updated and plays the same as it always has done with no extra content. The 64bit version (running only under win64) gives extra gfx effects, high res textures, and extra content.

I was talking about the 64bit update.

Search these forums, theres a guide on how to do it.

Which I followed, and it worked perfectly.

That's not the true 64bit update, it's a patch that's taken the enhanced texture and extended draw distance features in the 64bit patch and converted them to something 32bit Windows can actually read.

Nothing to do with marketing hype, just that hardware has come such a long way since Far Cry was released that they can handle it through 32bit now.

I think it is to do with marketing hype. It was made to promote Athlon 64 processors. It's true that people running the 32bit version might have struggled to run the update at a decent speed, but if that was the only reason, why put artificial restrictions in place to stop it running in 32bit? That would be like the devs saying their game needs 2GB of RAM so they make the game refuse to run if they don't have that much. It would be pointless, they might as well let people with only 1GB try it and see if it still runs ok.

Also I doubt the CPU power would affect the performance of the update. Since it's mostly graphical effects the graphics card would have a more significant impact on performance.

Keep in mind how far processors have come since Far Cry was released though, but far more importantly keep in mind how far graphics cards have come. Most of the stuff in the 64bit patch was eye candy like textures and massive draw distance, stuff that modern graphics cards can easily make sure the CPU isn't messing about with at all.

I am sure games like Oblivion would've been having 64bit patches back then too.
