64 bit nvidia drivers

ok, this is a weird one. Downloaded the latest Vista 64 drivers for my GTS. After installing, Windows reports a problem with Age of Empires (not installed) and the drivers don't appear to work leaving me with standard VGA. Tried the older .22 drivers and I get pretty much the same thing. The drivers off Windows Update do seem to work but they're pretty old now.

downloaded the US .24's and they seem ok

there's a similar thread on nvidia's own forums which seems to have produced no official answers.

to be fair, I never said the drivers were faulty.
