I am currently getting the parts together for a new build (4gb of ram etc). I was just wondering though what compatibility is like for 64-bit OS's nowadays.

I have access to XP 64-bit through uni, but i have heard it is a bit of a pain finding drivers (although that was around a year ago). Is this still the case?

If so, is vista 64-bit any better? I also have 32-bit ultimate and don't really want to be shelling out on a new OS tbh.

Basically my question i guess is, should i bother with 64bit XP or stick with 32bit XP/vista ultimate?

Haven't found anything that doesn't want to work in 64 bit vista but works in 32 bit vista tbh, drivers aren't an issue at all except for my outdated sweex webcam...

If you have 32 bit ultimate you can request a 64 bit dvd instead I think... Alternatively download a 64 bit image and use your own licence key on it...

Imo it's stupid to go 32 bit now, even for simple things like cinematic mod for HL2 it's worth having 64 bit :p. 4Gb is really the way to go on vista...

i did not know you could request a 64 bit version. could you tell me how to go about it? also I just checked and my copy is only an upgrade disc, i am guessing that will probably matter wont it?

would my key still be valid on a 64bit version like you suggested?

damn that was a lot of questions for one post! sorry!

This ^^^

The only thing which gives me a little grief is some AVI converts in VIrtual Dub, however I kind of found ways around them (in other words using the 32 bit version of virtual dub :p)

No point in going with 32 bit Vista. xp 32 bit is quite good all round and stable these days, but 64 bit xp (although stable) is hard to find drivers for some hardware. 64 bit vista however is the way to go for most users with modern hardware. If you like to use the odd old program/hardware however I'd dual boot 32 bit xp with 64 bit vista.

cheers for the replies guys.

i am coming around to the idea of 64bit vista but i don't want to shell out yet again on another version of essentially the same OS. will my serial key work in the 64 bit version? if so i could probably borrow the discs from my friend

You can use that AFAIK. Don't enter your product key when installing. It will then prompt you to pick the version of Vista that is applicable to your product key. Install, then don't forget to enter a product key before you activate;)
