I will likely be doing a big upgrade soon (hardware and software) and I am wondering if I should go for a 64 bit version of windows 7 when it comes out.

What I don't know is whether there are still any disadvantages to running a 64 bit os these days. I know there used to be compatibility problems but I would guess these have largely been ironed out now. If I do go for 64 bit I don't think i will have problems with drivers as i'll be running it on new hardware (but if i'm wrong please let me know).

Questions that spring to mind are these -

Will it run:

photoshop cs2
acrobat 8 pro
adobe go live
Steam
filezilla
blackberry desktop software

and loads of other programs.....

I can't think of all the other questions right now - but if someone could just point out any pitfalls they've come across I'd appreciate it a lot.

Cheers

thanks for your replies. in light of what i've heard here i can't think of any reason why i would go for a 32 bit os again.

i didn't know that a 64 bit os would run 32 bit apps.

I can confirm it definitely runs:
photoshop cs2
acrobat 8 pro
Steam
filezilla

Not sure about the others. But yeah, I've only had problems with a few very obscure programs, you'll be fine!

many thanks for the specifics on these programs. they are important ones for me.

quite fancy the idea of having a huge amount of ram installed :D
