Hello all,

Are the 64-bit discs specific to an individual flavour of Vista or do they have all versions on it, similar to the 32-bit discs?

I've bought Ultimate Upgrade from a Student site but it only includes the 32-bit version and no offer for the 64-bit discs through Microsoft's site.

I understand Ultimate retail comes with the 64-bit discs so I'm not sure if this has been omitted from the other 64-bit discs.

I have Home Premium (Retail) in 32-bit form and was wondering if I could get the 64-bit discs for this and just choose it for the Ultimate installation.

If this breaks any rules, feel free to remove, but I've paid for the software.

Thanks. :)

If you have home premium 32 bit Retail not OEM you can request the 64bit home premium disc but you won't get ultimate

The disk has all versions on it for x64 and the x86 disc. You key dictates which one installs.

You say that, but I won a copy of Retail Vista Ultimate in December. It was only the 32bit disc in the case and when installing it installed 32bit. I tried my code with a 64bit disc, and it installed 64bit Vista. :/

Or do you mean that an x86 disc has home-ultimate and an x64 disc also has home-ultimate but your key picks which one is installed?

From what I'm aware the disc will contain only one version of Windows Vista, either 32bit or 64bit however your key will allow you to install either the 64bit or the 32bit version. If you don't have a retail disc you'd need to get a 32bit disc from a friend, although if you have retail you can request the other version from Microsoft. If you wanted to go to Ultimate though from Home Premium you'd need a new license which would probably be in the form of an upgrade rather than buying a whole new operating system.

I think this is what I'm looking to hear.

I understand a key for Home Premium wouldn't activate Ultimate - but I do have an Ultimate key - just not the 64-bit Ultimate disc.

I wasn't sure whether the 64-bit Upgrade disk from Microsoft would have Ultimate on it because, as mentioned, they include the 64-bit with the 32-bit in Ultimate Retail (supposedly).

Ultimate has the media, HP you have to send off for it.

I understand that. I do have Home Premium but it doesn't take advantage of two physical processors, so I need Ultimate. The Ultimate I bought is 32-bit and doesn't seem eligible for the 64-bit discs through Microsoft's site.

The HP, as retail, is eligible for 64-bit discs and I just wanted to know if I will get Ultimate on those discs and use the key I got with my 32-bit Ultimate.

I don't know where you won your copy of Vista Retail Ultimate from.
However ALL Vista Ultimate Retail packs (Upgrade & Full) contain both the 32bit & 64bit DVDs.

Would an OEM Vista home premium 32bit key, activate a 64bit home premium install if I could get hold of a x64 DVD?

I have tried requesting the x64 media from Microsoft but it just throws me an error saying "no offer found" so I'm gueesing the answer is no, and I will have to buy a new copy of x64 OEM to get a x64 product key.

Is that correct?

I will soon let you know as I have borrowed a x64 disc from work to try my oem x86 home premium serial number.

Just about to have fish, chips and mushy peas and then will be doing an install on a seperate drive - I will not plan on activating this evening. I will be testing various applications to see if they work. I will not be connected to the net during this period. If all goes to plan I will back up my current installation and then format and install x64 and then try and activate.

If it does activate I will be buying more memory. 8Gb hopefully.

I threw a 64-bit Vista SP1 DVD (MSDN) disc into my Dell, fed it the serial from the sticker on the case (Home Premium) and it installed 64-bit Home Premium Vista. So yes, borrow / copy a disc off someone and you'll be fine.

An x32 Serial will activate the equivalent x64 version too.

And AFAIAA, the x64 disc includes all versions, including Ultimate.

Did you manage to do this. I am about to buy the student copy but want to make sure I can install the 64bit version. I can get any flavour of disk easily through work.

this is how i understand it..

if you have a 'retail' key, it'll work on 32 and 64bit retail discs (for the flavour -ie home basic) you've paid for.

if you have a 'oem' key, it'll work on 32 and 64bit oem discs (for the flavour -ie home basic) you've paid for.

but a manufacturer oem (ie dell oem) will only work with dell media

Thanks for the reply, I'm not sure if this upgrade version counts as a 'retail' version or if there is something special about the Student Key/Disk.
