Hi,

Thanks to the Microsoft action pack, I've currently got legit copies of Windows XP x64 and Vista Business 32 bit. What do I do:

Install XP x64 (worked for me for ages)
Install Vista Business 32 bit, (never used)
Buy Vista Home premium x64.

I've just bought a Q6600 with 4 gb ram so decisions :|

If you're going to keep your system for a couple of years (or more) - Vista64HP.
If you want to make full use of your RAM (or plan on getting more) XP64.
If you're not bothered about using all your RAM then install VB32.
What you don't use, sell or use on a second system.

You should have Vista Business 64bit in MAPS

Alternatively, you can upgrade to a full Vista Ultimate (retail) for around 100 squids (again part of MAPS)

I would go with Vista 64. Just make sure all your drivers are available for your hardware, and also that there are no incompatabilities with any of your software. I have Vista 32-bit and since it runs all my hardware and games fine, with no need for 4 Gigs of RAM or tbh, even the 64-bit address space YET, I see no need to upgrade.

If you can afford it, get Vista x64.

If not, then XP x64 is also a good operating system. :)

Cheers guys,

Just going to decide when to buy Vista then I think.

Are you sure, because I've been right through it and can't find it :(

Today is my last day at work, so I'm free! I'll be taking the plunge and moving from Vista Home Prem x32 to x64. Looking forward to it. I'll run my various 16bit apps under XP in Virtual PC 2k7.

Yup - got the 64bit VB disc here in front of me, think it arrived in the June update.

The upgrade to Vista Ultimate is mentioned in the literature and also online. When you upgrade the MAPS VB, it becomes a retail VU :)

Well my move to the 64bit OS 'looked' to have gone smoothly. However it didn't and I'm back on a fresh x32 install.

x64 installed fine and for the first few hours was amazing. It felt more responsive and iTunes was running very fast for once. Coverflow wasn't sluggish at all like it was on x32. Browsing even felt a lot faster on FF, I've no idea if the TCP implementation is different on x64.

Then I switched on my 5x external hard drives and things started going pear shaped. Two of them are WD Mybook Premium externals (connected via firewire), and they would randomly power down and the only way to get them back up was to reboot. Then my two usb ones began doing similar things. It was like there was a power saving feature in place but I'd double checked their controller settings.

Everytime those hard drives would play up, explorer would become unresponsive and I just got sick of it. I then found out that Canon have yet to release 64bit drivers for my 2x Canon printers, so I'm pretty much screwed in that sense anyway. They're normally very good for drivers.

Aside from those issues, x64 was brilliant.
