64 bit Windows 7 takes 3 attempts to start?

I've recently installed a 64 bit version of Windows 7.

It ran fine for a week or so, but now every time I try and start it, it boots into Windows and all my programs lock up (won't open or let me do anything in them), but the whole system doesn't lock up... I can still open task manager, open the windows menu etc.

Now, I have to force it off with the power button, then boot it up again and the same happens... force it off again, then the third boot everything works fine.

Seriously weird, and I'm just wondering if anyone can think of a logical reason this might be happening?

Cheers

Have you installed any new software or hardware recently?

As theheyes suggests, check the Event Viewer and see if anything leaps out. Crashes tend to show up with a nice big red X next to the event item.

If nothing presents itself in the Event Viewer try booting in Safe Mode and see if you have problems. If it runs fine it would suggest a service or start up item is giving you grief.

Cheers guys, looks like it was VMware causing it: "The VMware Authorization Service service hung on starting."

Disabled the service and it hasn't happened since (fingers crossed).

Why I never check the event log straight away I'll never know. Really need to stick that to my screen or something :p

Clean install?

Yep it was.

The Event Viewer is the first thing I look at when my PC does things I didn't tell it to do :p

Saved myself a lot of headaches :)
