Hi,

My intention is to build a new system based on X79 motherboard with 64 GB Ram.
My question is:
Is it safe&secure to build such a 64 GB Ram system using 2 x 32 GB Ram kits. I`ve seen that Overclockers are selling for £179.99 (which I consider to be a pretty good price) the GeIL EVO Corsa 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Quad Channel Kit. I was thinking to buy 2x GeIL EVO Corsa 32GB (4x8GB) and build this way a 64 GB Ram system. For motherboard I was thinking that Asus P9X79 PRO will be a good choice.

I`m really looking forward for an advice especially from Oveclockers.co.uk staff. :)
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Shouldn't have a single issue assuming none of the parts are faulty!

Make sure you have the correct operating system to use that amount of RAM.

64 bit, obviously, but with Windows 7 you need the Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate editions.

Home Premium can only access 16GB, the versions above can access 192GB.

Wrong on that count mate.

I have the same X79 setup (64GB 1600MHZ) and 2 x 32GB Kits are not guaranteed to work and you are buggered.

I won't bore you with details but this is the first platform in a while to offer 64GB ram and its a bit buggy.

My advice right now is to stick to a single high-speed 32GB Kit.

Don't go and buy multiple 8GB or 16GB kits either, same problems.

Good for high-res. photo and video work. I'm wanting to get one for September and get more later, but the GeIL set may very well make it easier to get than the Corsair 32GB sets.

Sure but you need to be 100% sure the RAM is certified on the board and with actual users using it.

If i had my time again and I was not water-cooling and its on the Rampage IV Extereme, I would look at the Ripjaw's.

I went with Corsair as I wanted to stick water-blocks onto them.

Ah okay. I hadn't read any reviews mentioning the issue, on either motherboards or RAM kits. But I guess it means GeIL may have a good number of customers who bought 8 DIMM boards. ;)

Unfortunately the Rampage (too complex, too prone to problems) and also the fact that Intel moved the Memory controller onto the CPU have conspired to create a mess in this generation. The refresh in Q4 should fix these problems.

I only plan to buy my parts after September anyway. I knew there had to be some sort of problem with it, but I hadn't found anything until now.

GSKILL is king of compatability on the X79 I am sure of that having helped many many users with problems on the ASUS forums.

For that much memory unless you have a special CPU IMC you have to sacrifice speed anything above 2133mhz it seems is almost impossible.

For your uses 1600mhz is fine anyway.

When I made the first post I though to go for a less expensive solution, but now, after a bit of more reading I think I`ll go for Corsair Dominator 1600MHZ and ASUS P9X79 WS. A bit more expensive, but far more secure. Will see. :)

@Surveyor - Of course. I installed Windows 8 Consumer preview on my laptop, and except the weird Metro UI in the beginning, it`l be a pretty solid OS. In the end I`m sure it`ll run Win8.
@Orcvader - it`ll be a workstation.
@Besty - Thanks for your input. I was pointed in another thread to your Project "International" - x79, 3x7970, 64GB RAM and I have to say that I`m impressed. It really helps my morale to go for it. Again, Many Thanks!!! :)
@Orcvader - Thanks for the link. I checked the reviews on Newegg.com and I got scared. :) Thanks anyway.
@8 Pack - Yep, I`m not going to overclock the memory. Just the CPU. I forgot to check the Asus forums. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks for feedback guys.

Sorry, I`m not up to date with the new Sandy&Ivy Bridge CPUs hardware generation.
What do you mean by a refresh in Q4?

You will see an updated Rampage board (Probably Rampage 5) and and Intel 6 or 8 core CPU around November 2012.

Might be worthwhile hanging on for that.

That is indeed a good reason to wait a bit, even though you never know how long to wait for the right moment. I can still manage with 24 GB, but I will love to have a bit more room. :)
I`ve seen people talking about memory prices. I hope memory prices will not change that much. Not long ago, you had to sell an arm and a leg to buy more memory than average user. That is the main reason for me to update, the 64 GB Ram. Still, 4 months is not that much.
Thanks.

If your going ASUS board I would still go Ripjawz above corsair mate. Every single time. Why??? well the Bios engineers use GSkill RAM a lot and confirm its operation on these boards.

Yes they use other RAM to QVL but they work closely with GSkill and they all bench with GSkill so when they are writing Bios code they want the tuning to be optimum for there own stuff.
