Hi, I'm about to start work on my new build but am having trouble what OS to go for. Win 7 64 or Win 7 32 bit.

I know with 64 bit I can add more ram at a later date if required and would definately like that option but I have heard of compatibility issues with it with particular software/hardware.

What are the likely problems I would run into if I use 64 bit ? I'm a keen gamer/photoshopper.

OK, seriously though. 90% of games I own from L4D to Portal to Tomb Raider work as good if not better on x64.

There are games like NFS Carbon that won't work but that didn't work on Vista anyway.

Quake 1 works but some of the engines don't.

I'll mainly be playing military sims/FPS and RTS games so I'll probs go for 64bit and bump up my ram at a later date.

Not going with x64 these days is ridiculous. So yes, take the plunge.

I have to agree with Lysander.

I ran Vista x64 and there was some slight problems but since I have gone to Win 7 x64 I haven't encountered any such problems.

I also play L4D and L4D 2 and they run smooth as anything on it.

The *Poll* has spoken. Failure to comply will result in devastating consequences. :p:D

Unless you are aware that a piece of software which you use will simply not work in Windows 7 x64 or a hardware device doesn't have the appropriate drives which nowadays is very far and few between, Windows 7 x64 should be the default choice. In those rare cases where a piece of software and / or a hardware device isn't supported, I would serious look into an alternative solution which will work in Windows 7 x64.
