64bit browser

a 64-bit version of Flash will not appear for ages - Adobe know people want it, but as they have such a monopoly with that plugin for web content they just aren't bothering. Instead they just make numerous excuses for why it's taking so long. Maybe in about 5 years they'll release a beta version :p

Been waiting for one for my Ubuntu Studio 64bit install for ages!!!... there is supposedly a fix (in Linux not sure about Windows) that I'll have to try for now!!

hardware wise 64bit is becoming very useful ie- quad core, 4gb ram + etc

software wise there isnt reali much demand for 64bit apps as many people still use 32bit OS's thats the problem we have......

Now that 4GB of memory is the norm, I can see that changing over the next 12months.
It's the norm if you live in OcUK land, it's far from it in the consumer space. But more and more machines are coming with 3GB (I guess this is the most that can go in before someone complains that they paid for 4 and only got 3.5).

Obviously I hope 32-bit dies a quick death, but there will always be people who insist that the latest version of whatever app should run on their 4 year old P4 or whatever.

There's already been a thread on this a couple of months ago!!.. Someone bought a Monster PC from Dell and specified 4Gb only to find when he recieved it a couple of days later it had Vista Ultimate 32Bit installed so it only saw 3.4Gb (or there abouts)... at no time did it say on the Dell site this may happen!!... :o

The only reason (or at least one of the reasons) the 32-bit version of the browser is there is for compatibility.

As said above, plugins aren't really available for 64-bit IE yet

Flash works in 32bit IE on Vista x64. I couldn't get it working in Firefox though.

on the subject of 64 bit ........which is the better O/S winxp 64 or vista 64 bit

just that im gonna be upgrading my memory to 4 gig and its on 64 bit systems thats gonna utilise it

any opinions ???

Probably Vista as it was presumably built with (consumer) 64bit in mind. I would think XP's 64bit incarnation started out as a server OS.
Linux also likes 64bit.

Firefox flash working in Gentoo, but Opera not sorted yet,
Not really tried in Vista64 yet, don't do much net in any windows, and Vista's only on my box for the benefit of assassin's creed.

You want to go with Vista x64 as it uses your memory much better than XP x64 and is a much nicer OS in general. Things such as superfetch make so much difference, launching applications is much quicker and the hardware support in Vista x64 SP1 is much better than XP x64.

You're havin a laugh aren't you?

1. The human eye can distinquish fewer than 200,000 colours. 32 bit colour (which is really 24bit plus some switch bits I believe) offers 4,000,000,000,000 (ish)
64bit colour would therefor be.....
16,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ish.
So, if you can see the difference, I dunno mate, you must have good eyes.

And Macroshaft, for all their evils, did not "limit" XP to 4GB, that's the most memory you can have in 32bit, even LINUX can only do 4GB on 32bit.

WOW macroshaft? So original. You spend all that money on your components and decide Microsoft are money grabbers?

Yep running 64Bit Vista here and its excellent :D Quicker than my previous 32Bit install also.
