I am certainly now looking at getting the 64bit vista but i have read somewhere it is only good if i get a 64 bit processor. Is this true or are the intel duo cores 64bit? any advice please
64bit vista only benefits from a 64bit cpu?

It will indeed only work on 64-bit ptocessors. Luckily for you all the Core 2 processors are 64-bit. 
Plain Core Duo processors from a few years ago are NOT 64-bit capable.
