Looking to retire our 58” Panasonic 4K LCD into the lounge for the kids to use and now looking for a 65” OLED I think.

However, it’ll be used for football, PC & PS4/PS5 gaming by me, just random TV shows for the wife.

Should I be considering an OLED screen for gaming? Or is screen burn a thing of the past and no longer something to worry about?

Only looking to spend about £1500ish but there is some flexibility if needed. Don’t mind getting last years model either of it’s far better value for money.

Thoughts and recommendations please. :D

Oled is fine for gaming. Screen burn is definitely not a thing of the past, but it's not such a big issue that you can't game on it.

65" LG C9 is just out of budget, but worth every penny if you can stretch to it.

Anything that can be done if you do experience burn in? I take it that can’t be fixed under warranty?

Don’t mind stretching the budget for the right set.

It must have 4 x HDMI 2.1

The closest is the LG B9, which has HDMI2.1. Cheapest price that I've seen from a reputable group is £1600, and that includes a 6 year warranty.

I have an OLED 65", screen burn is only an issue if you let it be really. If you have static content it's more likely to be an issue (logos that stay in the same place a lot).

Whatever you do try and get it from a reputable company such as Richer Sounds or John Lewis, probably true whatever TV you get really.

Great IQ and I don't regret mine at all.

My work colleague messed his up though by playing the same game for hours on end (Elderscrolls online). That has static elements so inevitably broke his.

My 3+ year old e7 still has no burn in at all, done a ton of gaming with HUDs enabled like assassins creed, spiderman, god of war etc.

Have some common sense and you'll be fine.

If you can only play games with no static HUD it's useless TV, so get LCD.

I've played plenty of games with static hud no issues, if you are spending thousands of hours in the same game with static hud then it could be an issue.

QLED has screen burn warranty for this type or application. For light gaming and watching films/TV shows OLED seems fine.

65" LG B9 is the best bang for buck at £1600 and of course it has HDMI2.1 but i personally own a 65" Panasonic GZ950 which is exceptional.

Thanks chaps.

The kids are useless at turning things off and I’ve fallen asleep with the PC on before, perhaps an OLED isn’t such a great idea then.

Do any LED’s even come close to OLED performance? Seen QLED, Nanocell, are they pretty much all the same tech or is there a stand out alternative?

It's a non issue that even, can't comment on anything bar LGs oled but...

- screen saver activates after 5 minutes of inactivity
- ps 4 pro and PC dim right down to 0% brightness after 5 mins of inactivity (or screen saver if you have it turned on)
- can set a timer for the TV to turn of after 4 hours in inactivity

No LCD comes anywhere close to an OLED for sheer IQ.

That sounds promising. :D The inactivity settings automatic generally then?

Just as an example if a game was paused for two hours in the menu screen would it detect inactivity? Or is that when it’s likely to become damaged? It’s not an unlikely scenario in my house no matter how often I tell the kids to turn things off.

Have an OLED (C9 65") but also QLED (yes burn me am a heratic), Q9FN before samsung seemed to have changed there QLEDs design entire for 2019 and went for wide viewing angle with Q90R at expense of colour volume and contrast ratio. Personally for most normal content and viewing, more so HDR for it to pop I prefer my Q9FN, but I do have a bright house.

For gaming however the LG OLED's are pretty perfect. As mentioned above, there is a screensaver not to mention HDMI 2.1 on 2019 / 2020 panels, ability to pass eARC / VRR etc. Unlike most LED TV's also, when you turn on gaming mode, the picture IQ stays very good on OLEDS while LED's will usually cut processing to lower the response times which in turn will somewhat crush the picture IQ in game modes.

Primary reason why I picked up a OLED alongside the QLED, I tend to game more now on the living room TV with a dedicated HTPC in there and plan to pick up a next gen console, there gaming capability is pretty damm amazing, you will be happy.

Really tempted to pick up a C9 TBH. Looks like the 2019 model is just about within my budget.

What’s it like for HD upscaled and 4K football?

Gaming sounds great and 4 x HDMI 2.1 is what I’m after too.

Qled burn in warranty is a marketing gimmick as LCD and in turn Qled, cannot exhibit burn in.

Would opt for C9 over B9 if budget allows. C9 has a better processor that with updates has meant better near black handling and Peak brightness in general with HDR content. HDTV test did good comparison.

For football and upsclaing its solid. Not best I seen, Sony's motion handling is better IMO for football, but your not going to know unless you have the two side by side. Likewise upscaling is also fine, not the best, some others do it slightly better, but nothing of concern. Overall while other TV's may be better in some area's by a small margin, C9 is pretty much one in all package that even when its not the pinnacle in a specific area, its still damn amazing.

C9 is sounding more and more promising.

Just out of interest, has anyone any experience of the Phillips OLED’s? I know they all use the same panels but being a Hue user, I’m curious about their Ambilight tech. I do wonder if the TV performs as well as the LG models though.
