650ti boost or 7870?

I'd not go for a 650ti. Either the 7870 LE, GTX 760 or HD7950.

Edit: Oops, I was thinking of the 660ti.

In that case - 7870.

The 650ti Boost is actually a pretty good budget card. Let's not forget it's basically a 660 with just a few less shaders.

You're getting out of the box performance that sits somewhere between the 7850 & 7870 for £120-125.

There's quite a big difference in most games, e.g. BF3 ultra - 660ti Boost 45fps, 7870 stock 59fps. Sleeping Dogs very high - 23fps vs 32fps.

It's really between the 7790 and 7850 (benchmarks put it slightly below a 7850), the 7870 outclasses it comfortably.

Surely this all depends on what "benchmarks" you read? Let's take this benchmark for example - Guru 3D MSi 650ti review

In this review we see the 650ti Boost easily keeping up with the 7850 and generally beating it.

Yup, but that model is already quite highly overclocked, so it's not a fair comparison against a reference 7850.

The thing is you can get a 2GB Gigabyte factory overclocked 650ti boost for £130.
A card that gives you out of the box performance that's more or less identical to the card in the aforementioned review.

Standard 7850's are generally around £10-£20 more expensive and their performance is worse.

I'd say that Nvidia offers slightly better bang for buck than AMD in this scenario, a scary thought I know.... ;)

Yeah, I think that an OC'd 650ti is a good buy, and AMD needs to drop the price on the 7850s. But 7850s with factory overclocks do perform brilliantly well, usually about the same as a GTX 660.

Also, since the 7850 and 70 are slightly older cards, almost all the benchmarks are 2012, and driver performance is massively better since then. The initial 7000 drivers were a bit crappy.

This is the most recent full review I could find of a 7850 with factory overclock:

It'd be fine, yeah. If you have a bit more to spend I'd try to stretch to a 7950 with the mega bundle, and sell the games you don't want.

Thats about as high as I can go with money at the moment.

What are the drivers like these days?

I heard they were pretty bad before with the 7870s :(

Yup, they were a bit rough last year when they came out but they've been fine for a while now, and improving with each release.

MSI's cards tend to be very good whatever the GPU so you're probably fine with that one.
