Im currently on a amd 3700 @ 2.7Ghz, socket 939 with 4x256mb ram. I want to go dual core for around £80. Cheapest i can find for a dual core 939 chip is £72 which is a 3800x2. If i did that i would sell my current ram and cpu for about £60 and pick up 2gb ddr400.

I was wondering is it worth going to am2 purely because of the price? I can sell my current cpu, ram and mobo to my dad for £90 so id have £170 to play with for am2.
65nm Amd 4000x2- £60 (another site)
DFI Infinity nF UltraII-M2/G- £41.11 (from ocuk)
2gb ddr677- around £70 (from a well known auction site)

I know most will scream that i should go to core2 but i really cant afford it. I'm looking for the cheapest way to go dual core and get best results. The question really is do the 65nm chips clock well enough so that its worth switching out all my major components?

Would stay with s939 for now, a X2 and 2GB of RAM would be fine.

The performance difference between C2D and AM2 is a gulf it isn't really worth buying AM2 as your main rig, Just my 2p...

you can do a budget Core2 duo setup for not much more then that....

you can score a e6300 or something in the MM for 70-80 quid....and a DS3 for 50 or less....then you just need to find some DDR2 memory.

I understand that i could go to core2 but i would probably only be able to afford 1gb of ram. Would it really be worth having a core2 chip with only 1gb ram as apposed to an amd dual core with 2gb? taking into account that this will be my last upgrade for a bit.

Don't forget the Intel price cuts on the 22nd may allow you to still get a Core2 with 2GB or RAM.

You wanna keep looking around for your RAM anyhow as I have found some DDR2-6400 1GB sticks for £35 inc. VAT and you don't have to risk using the auction sites.

firstly if you don't overclock, C2D is more or less identical to AM2 price/performance so no worries there, if you do overclock though you'd edge it with a conroe rather than an AM2 brisbane

if intel r doing price cuts on the 22nd then i think i'll wait until then. If i can afford it ill go core2, if not i think ill stick with 939 if the am2 65nm chips rnt a greta deal better.

i was planningon going c2d but then there was a display system at E3which showed a DDR3 system up and running. then i decided why bother with ddr2 when it will soon become out of date.
you should stick with your x2 and your next upgrade should be no less than quad core like me.

Ive decided im gonna wait till the 22nd and see what the Intel price drops bring but if i were to stay with 939 what do you think the best option would be? I will be overclocking and my board does a decent 300Mhz but is limited by the fact that it can only do 1.45v without a voltmod (its the asrcok dual-sata2).
The 2 chips ive been looking at are the opteron 165 and the 3800x2. Cheapest 165 ive seen is around the £100 mark whereas the 3800x2 is £72. I know the 165 "should" overclock further on lower voltage but its never guarentued, is it worth spending almost £30 more on a 165?

Well the 165 has 2 x 1mb cores over the 3800s 2 x 512kb which is nice...

My 165 doesn't have the best stepping but I recon I should still be able to hit about 2.7 with some extra volts - running stock atm on 2.45Ghz

I don't know about the 3800 but i've heard good things about the 4200s - most hitting 3ghz without much trouble - up to you though of course :)

Oh and its possible to find a 165 for less than 100 if you look around!
