660ti decent?

Ladies please, thanks for your input, but don't turn this into another amd vs nvidia fan battle.
I know the 7950 is a better card, but id want something like the msi pe version, not just the cheapest. I have considered a 7950 in terms of price and performance, but if I spend almost £300 it would be more beneficial to just buy a 7970.

I am open to suggestion though, I will probably end up going for the 7950, just want to see if anyone has experience with the 660ti compared to a 6950>70 or a 7870.

I went from a 6950 to the 7870, even at stock the difference is already fairly significant, i can't remember by what or how many FPS but it was very noticeable.

Overclocking the 7870 overclocks much higher and scales higher.

all in all it was a huge step up. the 7950 while only 10% faster than my 7870 at stock, it has much higher overclocking headroom because it starts out with a much lower base clock, clock for clock the 7950 eats the 7870 alive.

I bought my 7870 at the time when the 7950 was around £300, i did not think it was worth that. now at £240 for an MSI 7950 TF III, it's by far the best GPU you will get for that. it's better bang for £ than the 7870 and certainly the GTX 660ti

Sadly I cant get that MSi 7950 as its only till Wednesday, I dont get paid till Friday, plus I wont be able send my card back till Tuesday, so will miss the deal even if the card gets there next day.

Hopefully OCUK will throw up another great 7950 deal, otherwise Ill have to go competitor :(
Maybe OCUK will hold one at that price for me 'cause theyre legends :)

Honestly, I couldn't tell much difference vs a 7870 TFII at all, but my 6950>70's could both hit 1Ghz+ with ease=stock 580 performance or there abouts.

Personally I don't see much point going from a 69 to 78 myself, there's quite a bit of a hit to take with selling on and buying new for not much at all.

Take note that they don't all oc like champs either, 7970 WF went to 1100, His IceQ7950 went to 1150, and my MSI OC 7970 goes to 1140 at a huge push with the volts bumped right up or 1100 on stock, none of them clocked on the vram by more than 50MHz either.

I had to put in the Ghz bios to get anywhere with memory clocks on my 7970 as it would not budge at all, now I can get 1150/1500 but you have to keep temps below 65c or it artifacts everywhere, whereas on stock 1050/1500 GHz clocks the temps can reach 80c+ stable on auto fan, @1150 the noise is incredible as you need to use about 70% fan to keep the temps in check.

Yes, ask them to hold one for you, they can only say no.

Save me opening another thread......problem with the 7870.
During games/ benchmarks, the fans turn off and crashes.
I try to log it with msi afterburner, but it fails the minute it crashes and gives no hint of any problems.

Anyone have any ideas?

Can you test the card in another rig?

Failing that do you have another card you can test in your rig?

This Thread is a great read haha :D

I am recently looking at buying the Gigabyte GTX660 TI (OC) as the performance looks great and cost isn't to bad for what i can get.

But surely what you pick is based on your views and price you want to pay :D

Sadly cant test it in another, none have the right PSU.
I have tried my old 4830 (in the gf's computer) which works fine and Ive only just taken out my 6950/70.
I think I found the problem now though, theres been a couple of complaints about certain areas in Borderlands, but it still doesnt explain it turning off, I would have thought a bad game area would just cause the game to crash.

Oh well...RMA time for the 7950 :)

Did you overclock your card with afterburner, if so do you leave afterburner running in the background?

had a similar problem and this was the reason

I did OC with afterburner, but that was after I tried to bench it (I like to see how it comes out of the box and then how far I can get it).

I did try underclocking it and monitoring it, but surely if it has a log feature, it should be able to run in the background right?
