My friend recommends the 660ti over the 680 and claims the 680 is over kill.

My friend said:

Thats why I never go over the X60 versions of cards. You end up paying exponentially more for small improvements.
The 680 works better under load, but you couldn't stress out a 660 enough to matter.

Is the 680 more power effcient than the 660ti by much ?

I mentioned over clocking and he thinks this ( If you ever feel the need to overclock, get a new card. the hassle is not worth the risk)

Ps will be doing video editing so that has to factor into the choice between cards.
will the 680 offer anything more in terms of faster video editing ?
well anything significant

What risk? At most you get game crashes, maybe BSOD. Simply re-adjust value then retest, there's no physical damage to the card at all, unless you put too much voltage. But with the new GTX600 series that's not possible anyway.

The "X60" line is generally better bang for buck, as was the case for GTX460/560Ti. But for this generation IMO the 670 represents better value, until 660Ti falls in price anyway. But in the end it all depends on how much you have to spend and what games you are playing?

670 it is then.

For around £60 extra you could get something like the MSI GTX 670 Power Edition, which is known in some areas to perform as well as a stock GTX 680. It also still has good overclocking headroom too.

In some cases it is more than just a few fps.

However if your arguement is how pointless it is spending the extra £60 then you already have your answer. Also bare in mind that the extra FPS could help you stay above 30/60 fps in a few months or even a years time when technology has moved on even more.

So another thing you need to be asking is, how long will a cheaper card last me, and is it worth the extra investment to have the card last me a little longer?

Again it all comes down to your budget and your gaming requirements isn't it? There is no one card that everyone should buy. So to say outright that 680 is pointless is just silly.

If budget allowed I would've gone for a GTX670 too. I say the 670 is better value because the performance difference with 660Ti is greater than between 670 and 680, and at less price difference, too. Besides there is also the 7950 too that gives similar/better performance than 660Ti at less cost.

The 680 has it's place.

I have a 120hz screen, so it would be silly to go for anything less tbh.

I could have OC'd a 670 to death, but I would sooner buy a factory OC'd 680 and not worry about it.

IMO from the NV 6XX range the smart money goes on a custom cooled 670 with 680 PCB.

A bit more than referance, but if you shop around not that much more.

The GB WF 670 3x for £320 is a GREAT buy.

At stock (factory o/c'ed) its near a 680 and its a fair chunk cheaper. It also o/c's like a beast!

I read somewhere that for other tasks such as encoding (Which you said you'll be doing) that the 5xx series cards are better for that. Will try and find it somewhere.

6xx series are nto that great on the computing side. double precision performance is worse than 5xx series I remember.

Its more so for gaming than video editing , the video editing I will not be doing to often.
I'm still trying to decide which card to get though , I will be buying in 4 weeks time.
