I am in need of an upgrade from my ageing but very faithful GTX 260. I want to spend around £200. I know new AMD cards are being released very shortly but the two cards on offer this week seem good deals. Which would be the better card?

GTX 670 4gb for £200
7970 for £239

Gaming Needs:
2560x1600
Hawken
Elite Dangerous when it's released next year (requirements unknown)
Supreme Commander 2
Possible BF4

System:
Currently C2Q 9450 at stock speed ( won't overclock), 8gb, 600w PSU
Shortly to upgrade to an 8350 or i5

Other:
Needs to be quiet at idle as I use the PC for work.
I am likely to keep this system for 3 years when upgraded
I use the monitors not in eyefinity as they are different resolutions

Thank you

There's no real competition between the 670 and 7970 - the 7970 is ahead in every way. Its high bandwidth is more suited to 2560x1600 as well. The Asus DCII cooler is silent normally, and very quiet at load.

Thank you sir. I know it seems an obvious choice but the 670 seems close to the 680 in some tests and the 680 and 7970 seemed to be quite close with one beating the other depending on the game.

I am leaning towards the AMD too due to the better performance at very high resolutions.

As ever, be cautious with some benchmarks due to reference clocks and old drivers. The 7970 GE generally outperforms the 680 quite comfortably, and the 670 by a wide margin. Even in games that strongly favour nvidia cards (e.g. Metro Last Light), once you get to 1600p, the 7970 will typically be ahead of the 680 - you see this even at 1440p.

Hold on A moment. This review shows the 670 as beating the 7970 in a lot of games even at 2560x1600:

The Asus 670 Directcu II is on sale this week for £199 and the Asus 797 is on sale today for £234. Given that the 670 does appear to be close to the 7970 and beat it in some reviews... for less money... is it still a a no-brainer to get the 7970?

Yeah definetly a 7970 at that rez and it should really be compared to the 680
