670 - To SLI or not?

Bit of a nuisance of a post, but I appreciate the help.

Have a 2GB ASUS 670 which is doing me just fine. I had planned on either getting another to SLI, or waiting to upgrade in a year or so to a completely new card.

Considering the 700 series though, I've been wondering if now would be the best time to pull the trigger on another 670 if I was going to head that route. I don't need the power yet, but I'd hate to miss out based solely on timing.

Best route?

SLI while the prices are low.

2x670s will beat the 770 and 780. And the 760 is slower than a 670 anyway.

Pretty happy with my 670 sli at the mo. Picked them up when they were £160 each :D Apart from my i5 bottlenecking them.....

Damn!

I've been pondering the plan this morning, and I really don't think there's anything I'm too fussed about running, until Star Citizen starts to trickle out late next year. Would it be better to let the single 670 tide me over till then, and then go for a complete upgrade to get high/ultra out of SC?

Depends on what you want really. I am seriously loving playing everything out there at the moment maxed out at 1080p at 60fps +

One 670 should be enough to play anything you throw at it at 30fps+ at the moment. I think that will change come some of the next gen console games though.

Im in the same position as you, but I have GTX 680 and an aging i7 960......ive wanted to upgrade for ages, but am holding off/saving for the release of Star Citizen so that I can get the latest tech as close to the release as possible.

Im aiming for a Haswell-E or Ivy-E CPU and SLI GTX 880's...as that game is going to cripple high end PC's on the highest settings.

2015 release date, so gives me plenty of time to save/plan.

As there's not all too much that a 670 won't 'handle', and barely anything I care about maxing in the next few months, I'm thinking it would be clever to hold off and do a larger upgrade nearer the time.

Bare in mind if you do go down the SLi route your top card will heat up quite nicely. I probably only have about 1cm between my 680's. I have purchased 2 x Antec Spot Cool 80's to try and get the heat down but have yet to fit them due to the bloody stupidly short cables fitted as standard by Antec. I need to buy a fan splitter cable and use it as an extension for them both. You could always go down the water cooling route if you have £££ to burn.

God l would think that applies to PC's in general, new sockets every other year, GPU's, it all burns a hole in your wallet.

Custom H2o cooled here, just went Sli 670 buying the blocks does not bother me, no way would l go back to air.

Indeed.....will be interesting to see how our cards handle the dogifighting module in December. :D
