Hi all!

I'm doing my 3rd build, (havnt done one in a loooong time though) and i have a question regarding the onboard graphics.

I've got the EVGA FTW 1080 ordered, but am wanting to build the rest of the PC early, install windows etc, just to make sure nothing is faulty.

Firstly, is this ok to do without the graphics card?

Secondly, will I need to download the VGA drivers for the motherboard (ASUS VIII Ranger) for the HDMI to work so i can use the monitor?

If I do need to install the MB VGA drivers, is it easy to remove them/swap to the 1080 without issues?

Thanks a lot!

It's fine to install windows without the discrete GPU.

It will use the basic Microsoft VGA drivers first (otherwise you can't see the installation stages). But after you install Windows to get the best performance out of it, download the right ones from the Intel site. If Windows 10 however, it will automatically install the Intel graphics drivers.

It's up to you, since 7 you can have multiple GPUs from various makes, so you can either leave it or uninstall it via control panel and disable it in BIOS.

sorry to jump on your thread.

If nothing is connected to the onboard display port I take it there is no additional work load on the cpu if its still has its internal gpu enabled in the bios?

Yup, if anything the only thing that will be wasted is RAM as the system will reserve some of it for the Intel IGP.

The IGP "might" be useful for DirectX 12 multi-adapter, but I have no idea how well that will run when coupled with a discrete GPU.

Most motherboards will automatically disable on-board graphics once you install discreet graphics, unless you configure otherwise in BIOS. However Windows will probably still be loading the Intel tray tools / control panel software. So it is then best to uninstall these if you do not plan to use the on-board graphics.

should be fine to set up and test a system with no graphics card, when i first built my 6600k system i had a problem with it not booting,

took a stick of memory out and my 270x and used the 6600k inbuilt gpu and it worked fine :)

turns out i had a mem stick in a wrong slot for dual channel lol
