I got an MSI OC 680 twin forzr 2GB which I have no complaints with . However I recently had the chance and went to 3 screen set running 3x27 inch monitors . This wasnt in my plans when i bought the 680 .Though currently the card runs everything fine , I use the pc for iracing which is dx9 i believe and still get around 60- 170 FPS on everything high , my son plays a lot of FPS like battlefield where is somewhat more demanding and auto sets most settings to medium , though medium in this is pretty good .
So either xmas or next year i want to add a second card to future proof a little , unless there is another generation of card on the horizon next year ?
I want obviously good framerates to keep up with iracing when it goes to dx11 , Noticing with comparison to project cars that there is a significant difference, even though I know CARS is still in alpha stage , leads me to believe there will be a hit on framerates . and in general enough ram to cope with 3 monitors for future releases of premium games
Therefore question is 2x 2gb cards would this be enough ram ? If not will a 4gb and a 2gb 680 work together , even though i may only be able to utilize 2gb .
this as a temporary measure , with intention sell the other 2gb card ,and top up the extra to replace with a second 4gb card as a plan .
Doing it the other way selling my existing card would leave us with no card for a period , which i want to avoid .
Alternatively do the new 680"s double up the ram unlike previous generations and will give me 4gb , or is there a way to use some of the PC.s ddr5 ram , of which iv got 8GB but can add some more to 16GB .
I know for instance at the moment iracing can utilize some of your PC ram for graphics which you cant set up to 2GB i recall from the last time i looked at the graphics settings . , though i dont know in the future .

4Gb+2Gb won't work together in Sli.

2+2Gb=2Gb total in Sli.

Wait until the Dx11 iracing comes out then see whether your single 680 can manage.

Those with with 2Gb will say it's enough, those with more than 2Gb will probably say 2Gb isn't enough, especially if it's 3x1440p.

2 x 2Gb cards should be ample for 3 x 1080 monitors, after that depends on how eyecandy you like from your games.

I have TriSli 4Gb cards but i set out to be able to do 3D surround,if i hadn't i would have not gone above 2 x 2Gb cards,
others will agree and disagree as opinions vary.

Thanks guys , Yeah they 1080 , and just regular surround , ill be quite happy to have solid 60 FPS as long as i can have that eyecandy , I dont see the point in having 200FPS if all i can see is 60 on a 60hz but have to have medium settings like in battlefield 3 .
So 2GB will be enough , and therefore a straight purchase of another of the same will do .
