6800 Ultra SLI - Power Supply Problem

Dear all,

I am running 2 * 6800 Ultra 256M cards in SLI configuration. I very often get Nvidia error messages claiming that there is insufficient power reaching one of the cards and that "settings have automatically been lowered". I believe I have wired the cards up correctly and my power supply is a reasonably decent one (Hiper 580Watts - HPU-4M580-PK). Often these error messages fill up the screen one after another. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can solve this problem?

Many thanks
Colin

Sounds to me as if the 12V rails are dipping every now and then. You could try connecting the cards so the load is more balanced, or disconnect some components you don't need.

The only other thing i can think of is buy a new PSU. Probably the Corsair 520W.

Odd the PSU is more that adequate for the task, perhaps a dodgy PCI-E connector or one of the rails on the PSU is failing?

Thanks guys - i think i may have the one rail also plugged in to other stuff...will see if i can re-jig it.

One other solution I was thinking of...to sell both the cards and buy a newer better single one. What do you recommend? 8800 GTS?

Cheers

A GTS would decimate 6800 Ultra SLI.

I would see what you can get for two 6800 cards and what you have to pay extra for a HD2900XT/8800GTS and decide if it is worth it.

I think a single HD2900XT or 8800GTS will beat a 6800SLI setup in most games but I am not 100% sure.

6800 ultra sli was, and perhaps still is one of the hottest and most power hungry setups available.

as far as I'm concerned 6800 ultra set the trend for mega gfx cards we're seeing now, far more brash and lairy than the 9800pro or x800xtpe.

I had one, it was great at the time but there are loads of cards around now that would batter the crap out of 6800 ultra sli, even a 7900GTX would probably beat it tbh.

3 years old remember.

According to NVIDIA the minimum recommendation for a PCI-E power supply is 450W for a mid-range 6800GT SLI and a whopping 550W for 6800 Ultra SLI

Also recommened 25a on the 12v so hardly that power hungry, but monsters of the day, I remember trembling at the sight of 6800 Ultra SLI with my single X800 :D .

the 8800 or 2900xt will laugh at the 6800 in sli tbh! :)

Lol cheers for making me feel bad :( . I feel like my cards are a slight breeze now compared to the hurricane of an 8800

EDIT: Calling all 6800 owners, fancy a OcUK 6800 club? :p

They were kings in there hayday, I remember dreaming of having a Ultra set up :( , Didn't have the money i do now, then.

I remember going from a mx5500 (terrible cards) to a single 6800. Id never seen the FPS counter on FRAPS go so high

And when i got a second 6800 in Sli, man did i feel like the don of graphics then :p

I get a similar message with a single 6800gs and a 450w psu. Its only ocassionally but performance is cut and it cant play back video even without stuttering.
Reboot or just leaving it fixs, I thought it was a loose cable but I guess not

what 3dmark05 do you get, 6k here

I loved my 3months of 6800GT action, so envious of the ultra owners  those cards owned so hard in their day thats true! Mines did blow on me tho lol
