6800 v 7300GT

I severely doubt it, go for a 7600GT or above. Does your motherboard have a pci-express slot, or are you still using AGP?

I upgraded my PC from an AMD 3000, 1GB 266 RAM, 20GB ATA66 to a P4 630 3GHz 1GB DDR400 with PCIe and 200GB SATA last year.

The DDR3 ones get over 5k in 05, 2.5k in 06, 11-12k in 03 and they overclock well. Plus they have more ram, run cooler, use less power - all for £67. They are better.

The DDR2 one son the other hand are abit naff, slightly worse than the 6800 probably.

Absolutely. Doesn't mean I would be using 1280x1024 though :)

I played through FC on a 6800 (marginally faster than a 6600gt) and in high settings even 1152x864 was verging on being too slow for my liking.

Will I be able to play Far Cry @ High 1280 x 1024 ok with a 7300GT?

if hdr is disabled then you can run farcry with all details at max at 1280x1024 with 2xAA and 16xAF and possibly 4xAA.

but with hdr enabled my system runs farcry at 1280x960, no AA but all details are at max including AF at max. without hdr i can run farcry at 1600x1200 with 2xAA and get excellent fps.

An X1600XT would do it then?

Yep, does me proud in FC does that card, OC'd slightly but then not that it made much difference really. I think the X1600XT is a better card than people give it credit... still have my eyes on a X1800/1900 tho lol

A standard clocked 7300GT (DDR2) is the same speed as a 6600 DDR2 card, which is slower than a 6600GT and slower than a 6800. To get something that's better than a 6800, and worth buying for future performance, then a 7600GT is the best choice.

I was referring to the 7300GT DDR3, which is equivalent to a 7600GS.

What settings though?

1280*1024 everything high, AA and AF but no HDR, the X700XT was slightly faster than the 6600GT i think, my SLI 7600GT i have no can play it at monitors native resolution (20" widescreen) with 8AA and 16AF forced on without any slowdown or anything, so IMO go for the 7600GT brilliant for the money and faster than 6800 ultra :D
