Guys my 6800GT agp card has died, wont work in my friends pc either but his works in mine.

Need to order a replacement card tonight and i have no idea what is around the same power or better these days. Was looking at that x1950 but the only agp one in stock is the 205 quid, the sapphire seem to have gone?

What card is as good as or BETTER than my old 6800GT that i can order as a replacement? around £150 max if possible, unless its a significant upgrade.

Needs to be AGP.

x1950pro is the card to go for, however if you can't stump up that kind of cash, the 7800GS is available at £164inc: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-016-BG

Looking at the specs, it's basically a 6800ultra but with +150mhz on the memory (and probably better overclocking potential)

Its longivity that puts me off, its not dx10 is it or wateva so i will have to do a full upgrade again next year, 205 quid for a card for a few months is pretty annoying :)

my rig mite bottleneck this too?

amd 3200
1gig..?

Your not the only one with a dead 6800gt agp

Gecube x1950 pro got a belting review in Custom PC. It says it is just as fast as gecube's pci-e version. 256mb and 512mb versions ,hope this helps :D

Well i ordered the gecube x1950 from this site now guys, thanks for all the help. It just seems a little bit of a waste of money spending £215 on a card that isnt really future proof. Also worried about my system bottlenecking it as only have a 3200 amd. Anyone know if that will work fine or not?

Bit gutted that no sapphire ones in stock, they wlda saved me £50, ah well :)

On a side note, anyone have a clue why a card wld be working and then 8 hours later suddenly be dead? odd that it was always fine then had this problem, i switched from dvi to vga which fixed it...and then it happens again and neither work. Worried that its something in my computer like a short or something ruined the card. Dont want my new one gettin destroyed :)

Thanks for the help again anyway guys, appreciate it.

I got a dead 6800 GT with an arctic cooling rev 4 or 5 hsf here too. It started artifacting in BF2 a couple of months ago then just died. I had it flashed to an Ultra, was a good little card while it lasted. I bought a HIS x1800xt 512 which has been fine to replace it.

My computer boots up with the card in but the minute I install drivers the display goes blank. If you could use my broke card to help fix yours then you can have it for nowt (the card is pci though), I just slung it in a box and threw it in a cupboard with a load of other bits and bobs :D

Thats a really nice offer man thanks, but think i will just slap my card in a box now and throw it in that cupboard too.

Already ordered the x1950 pro so will format my computer and hopefully carry on as normal :)

I would have advised a cheaper card and another Gig of ram myself for a more balanced system.
You can clock that 3200 to 2.4 it'll help out a tad.

Just wanted to ask what PSU you have and have you checked the rails for stability lately.

Hmmm it was a while back, pretty sure its a thermaltake something or other, came in a nice black box, its a nice black psu. It was highly recommended on the forums around the time i bought my rig. I do have the box at home in my cupboard so i will take a look tonight and get back to you on tuesday when i am back at work.

No i havent checked rails and stability as i have no idea what i should look for. If you cld give me any info on that i will check it when i get home tonight to be sure, as i expect that my card will be shipped tomorrow and i will receive on tuesday? in which case i want to check psu before i blow up a new card :)

I hear what you say about the memory etc but i am planning on a full upgrade when next gen games come out so this computer will just be going to my g/f for general use.

Plan was to get a cheaper card, but i need this rig to last me until the new fps games etc come out so couldnt take a performance hit, and for the price it seemed like a fairly decent investment.

Out of curiosity, is this a decent card? will it improve over my 6800gt significantly? i have not kept up to date with hardware since building my rig and now there are 2000 diff names on cards like xt xtx pro gs gt gtx etc lol

I was worried about getting the equivilent of an old MX grade card from nvidia, am sure one of those abbreviations is the new mx card.

X1950 Pro is an awesome card - it will blow your old GT out of the water.

I guess the equivalent of the old MX series is the GS range, although they're actually excellent cards. The 7900GS is an awesome card and is pretty much the same performance as the X1950 Pro (give or take) and a whole pile of cash cheaper........over this side of the Atlantic anyway :)

wish i knew that last night! :)

Actually cant see any AGP versions of that card on ocuk anyway, just 7800gs which is more expensive than the x1950 pro anyhow.

As above, the x1950 will totally decimate your old 6800 GT, its an absolutely cracking card, you wont have to upgrade for months yet now, sod Vista/Dx10, theres no games, and won't be for eons, Dx10 games will not flood out when Vista hits, and the odd game that does come out with Dx10 features will work in XP under Dx9 and look the same, enjoy your new card. :)

Thanks a lot guys, nice to know i am getting a performance increase.

A problem i have is that i always worry a framerate will be bad so play all my fps games in 800x600 and games like warcraft etc in 1024x768.

I see in all these reviews i read that they play the games in 1600x1200 etc which sounds quite mad. Doesnt monitor refresh rates mean that a high resolution like that offers rubbish performance in fps games etc?

The thought of cranking wow up to 1600x1200 or even just 1280x1024 whilst still keeping playable performance is appealing... :|

How do you really judge what the best resolution to play in is? i dont want the high res inadvertantly ruining the game, but also dont want to be stuck in the thought train that i must play fps games on 800x600 if its not necessary :)

Thanks

Don't go for the 7800 GS, this is whats said in my magazine about the x1950 pro and the 7800 gs, "it's good to see an agp card that isn't a massively cut down pretender(referring to the x1950 pro), such as nvidia's geforce 7800 gs gpu" :D
