My other half has a 6800GT 256MB card in her machine.
She games now and again on a 20" V7 LCD at 1440x1050 (where supported) or 1280x1024.
The 6800GT is fine for the level of detail etc she likes in a game, the problem - it is a noisy little thing to say the least.
It's a Gainward and the HSF arrangement is quite large.

I know I could probably spend some time making it quieter, however I can see that for £100+vat I could get an unbranded 7900 GS 256MB.
How should such a card stack up against a 6800GT both running at stock?
Can a £100 card or there abouts be on par with a 6800GT? If so which?
As quiet as possible would also be a major bonus - the 6800GT will be passed on to my brother and he isn't so picky about noise.

7900GS is a fair lot better.

The 7600GT is also better than the 6800GT & a really nice buy.

[i am not sure these will be any quieter, unless you get fanless versions]

7600 GT is faster than the 6800 Ultra, but the 7900 GS is better again, if you can stretch a bit then theres the OcUK Galaxy SILENT one in the 'This Week Only' for about £158, or if you don't can't stretch that far then theres the OcUK 7900 GS in the 'This Week Only' for only £116, not sure how quiet that would be though. :)

Thanks for the replies.

I have a 7800GTX in my own machine and find it a lot quieter than the 6800GT in hers.
It really is a large HSF arrangement on the Gainward 6800GT - so as long as the 7900 series is no louder than the 7800 series (I'm told if anything it is quieter still?) then it will be fine.

I'm certainly not stuck to NVidia - so if something along the lines of an X1800 would offer similar/better performance I'll take a look there.

Basically I'd like to spend no more than around £100+vat and end up with something as good as or better (performance wise) than a 6800GT and as quiet (or quieter) than a 7800GTX.
I know that "It's just a little more" for a GT and then "A little more" for a GTX etc.
But that is how you can quickly spiral from the initial £100+vat budget to £150 :)

I have a 7900GTO, the OcUK one, and it makes my old 6800GT look very slow indeed. Im loving it :) The cooler on it spins up briefly during boot up, but after that its quieter than my Zalman CPU cooler (So its pretty quiet).

The GTO really is a 'bargain' imho. Almost as fast as a GTX, at GS prices.

Trouble with most of the GS's, they come with those little 1 slot coolers, and personally I find the fans to be a bit irritating, and those small fans just dont last as well as the bigger fans. I've had more graphics fans fail, than any other part in my PC.

That said, the OcUK GS, seems to have an uprated cooler, perhaps its better than the standard 'reference' heatsinks. If its like the picture it does look improved.

The X1800XT is noisy in comparison and he made a point about noise. :)

Ok fair enough, they are a tad noisy! Also, if you're going to get ATi get the HIS (excalibur) as their coolers are quiet :)
