I do a fair ammount of adobe after effects work (and premiere pro) and lots of rendering / encoding. Im also an avid gamer.

I have a stock 4790k atm which is struggling in heavy after effects settings (my 16gb ram is limiting me too)

Been looking at 6800 and 6850.

The 6850 looks like the better bet as it seems better silicon and may clock higher than a 6800?

Im also worried about pci lanes. 28 vs 40. I dont fully understand these. Ill be running a 1080. I also intend to have an M.2 ssd. Is 28 lanes fine? Am i stuffed if i want a seperate soundcard?

I fully intend to wait for CES to see what new info becomes available about the new AMD offerings.

That said, im skeptical amd chips and motherboards will be available to buy until late Feb even March. Also i doubt an 8 core amd will be below 700.

Im balancing that up against 6800k costing 350 ish and clocking reliably to 4.1 or 4.2

Am i mad lol?

I have a 6800k, titan XP and a rampage 10.

My first 6800k was a poor clocker and struggled to reach 4.2, back in september i had to rma it because of a issue and intel suggested to replace the cpu. My new one will happily bench at 4.6, and fully stable at 4.5. I run it at 4.4 generally with some 3200 mhz ram and cache at 34.

Whilst you might have a better chance of a better clocker with the 6850k its really isnt worth the extra unless you need the extra lanes.

Thanks for the replies guys. Helpful stuff.

My next question is about motherboards really (assuming a 6800 or 6850) but this is the wrong place. Its been a while since i built my existing pc, but motherboards seem stupidly expensive!
