well, im going to be going water cooled in the next couple of months, and i want to cool the northbridge on my bfg 680i..

Obviously to do this, that means the heatsink has to come off... which brings me to my first question.. how easy is it to do this? because in removing the NB cooler, the SB cooler also needs to come off as they are connected via a heat-pipe.

My second question is: what options do i have to replace the southbridge? an 8800gtx is currently sat directly over the top of it at the moment, so would just like to know my options... I have just purchased a thermalright hr-05 sli cooler for a friend, this looks like a pretty good cooler to replace it with, but would it actually mount on the shouthbridge?

cheers!

The nb/sb assembly unclips from the back of the board. They use the push through pins, all you need is a pair of nose pliers. I have used the DD680i for the NB and a vantec iceberg for the southbridge. The original iceberg is a better fit but I wanted a little more bling so I modded a later revision iceberg by cutting it down slightly.

What did you have to cut on it ?? And how loud is the fan on it ?? please

as am still trying to work out how i want to cool my SB..As am not sure if i want to watercool it or air cool it..

The diameter of this version of the vantec iceberg is a little too big and rubs slightly against the capacitors so I cut out a little (ground down) the edge to give it a little more room. It fits fine now.

The fan is a little grating at 100% but I run it at 50% all the time and its silent. I am however replacing it with a waterblock this weekend so if you wanna give it a try then fire me an email and we can sort something out.
