6850/6870 Idle temps

Dual booting, so tried it in WinXP 32bit with 10.12 drivers only - no CCC.

Same thing; weird random speed bumps to max clocks, so it's not the Win7 OS install.

Rather off topic, spirits247, and I apologise, :o but do you have any idea how long your Sapphire 6850 is?

Normally I'm a Sapphire/Asus chap. Currently however, I have a XFX 6850, bought solely for its short length so it can fit in my mITX case. The fan is a dog though and I'd fancy swapping the card out at some point, but space is at a premium.

No problem Lunatic, would be glad to have a fellow tester join me!

The cards dimentions can be found here: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...sk=view&id=631&Itemid=72&limit=1&limitstart=1

9" long, but I don't think that includes the PCI-E connector sticking out of the end. The fan is super quiet. Only really gets loud at about 60%+, but it's more of a soft low woosh sound compared to other fans. Youtube might have some vids to get a better idea. My rig is very quiet, and this is amongst the quiestest "performance" cards I've owned.

I'll probably start a new thread about this issue, but back to the speed bumps which also affect temps, this is what it looks like surfing this forum:

sapphire6850speedbumps2.gif

Repeatable in Win7 64bit and XP 32bit with Cat 10.10, latest 10.12. It's getting quite annoying now!

Random spikes of max clocks, caused by the mouse scroll wheel, perhaps a few due to flash and also some unexplained speed bumps when the system is just sitting doing nothing.

Powerplay is a constant pain in the ass! :D

Well I've done some serious scientific testing and here are the conclusions:

1) GPU-Z causes the periodic and random max clock spikes when it's running. No GPU-Z, no spikes on an idle desktop.

2) vBulletin forums cause the clocks to max out in IE8 when scrolling using a PS2 mouse wheel or PS2 keyboard keys! Other websites are less likely to do this in 2D none-Aero mode. I visit a lot of vBulletin boards so it stood out to me.

3) Actually, most websites cause the clocks to max out in IE8 when scrolling using a PS2 mouse wheel or PS2 keyboard keys when Aero/3D desktop is enabled.

The scrolling/max clocks issue causes my GPU to fluctuate between 47-57C all the time. Looks like a bug in the drivers as it does it in XP and Win7 - not sure if it affects USB mice and keyboards, or Firefox/alternative browsers. Perhaps not, which is why not many are moaning about this.

I've tested with Firefox, and it doesn't cause the max clocks bug. Only IE8 so far.

So check your idle temps and clocks if you use IE8 - just scroll up and down this forum with a mouse wheel or keyboard. I'm not sure if USB devices are affected the same way as PS2. My idle has now dropped to 44C after avoiding this bug!
