Decided to give nvidia a try and bought a 560ti which seemed to be the best value for money. Uninstalled all AMD drivers, installed nvidia ones and started running some performance tests.
Card is clocked at 850/1000 so slightly overclocked.
First test was FurMark and to my surprise the 560ti had the same aver. frame rates as my slightly overclocked 6850. Not only that but the 560ti seems to stutter occassionaly
I am confused as I expected the 560ti to give a good boost.

560Ti should be a fair bit faster across the board. Might be worth taking the drivers off, running Driver Cleaner, and doing a fresh driver install.

Looking at this article, I wouldn't use Furmark to compare the performance of different cards. Furmark is great for stress testing GPUs and checking they are stable, but if you want to check your performance against another card use a proper benchmark.

Furmark is NOT a benchmark, its nothing its a virus, its worthless but happens to be the single most likely thing to kill your card via overheating.

Anyone that runs it is frankly, crazy.

One way to cook your card.. as above furmark is useless and to most GPU companies it is a virus that damages their cards and they even have measures in their drivers these days to stop it running 100%. Stay away from Furmark if you want your card to work for a long time.

Also it sounds like your drivers have not taken because you had an AMD card in before, try driver cleaners but honestly the best thing to do is a full reinstall of windows and that way you will have a clean setup without any problems. Also try some games and game benchmarks and see what you get, you may find the card is running 100% right and as I said Nvidia drivers block furmark from running to its full potential. I always use games when I get a new card and do some benchmarks that way.
